For “Green Lantern”, yU+co created some impressing motion graphics for the lead-in and credit crawl showcasing some great CG work and RED Camera footage.
yU+co. was invited by Director Martin Campbell and Producer Donald DeLine to create a :90 second opening in 2D and stereoscopic 3D for Warner Bros.’ comic superhero story, Green Lantern. Using stylized patterns of light and color, the opening sequence takes the viewer on an immersive ride through the far reaches of outer space, showing the formation of the intergalactic peacekeeping corps of Green Lanterns and the evil force of fear that the superhero must destroy in order to maintain a balance of power in the universe..

Recently, Nickelodeon celebrated Dora the Explorer’s 10th birthday with a special hour-long episode. In the episode, all of the classic characters seen in over 100 countries and 30 languages come together to celebrate Dora’s birthday. The 45-second opener was created by yU+co and Nickelodeon using several miniature pop-up sets, a Camera 5D MArk II, and AfterEffects and Maya.
The whole process of creating the stop motion animation took six weeks from beginning to end — building, shooting, animating and editing the practical sets and characters. Despite certain limitations, Boey is proud of how he and his team brought it all together and created it from nothing. When asked what attracts him to working in this type of animation, which can be so meticulous and time consuming, Boey notes, “You have to have an obsessive compulsiveness and extreme patience to do stop motion animation, which I do, and I absolutely love doing it!’’

As the Oscars approach, TCM has begun their “31 Days of Oscar” program airing some of the greatest Oscar winning films in history. With every such promotion, they need a promo clip and the job fell to yU+co, who recreated a virtual flatbed and filmstrip.
”In order to make the film appear as if it was moving, the right amount of grain, blur and flicker had to be created and the ‘ride’ up and down of the filmstrip replicated as it moved through the machine,” says Taylor.
Elements were created in Maya and After Effects and then composited in Nuke, with most shots having at least 6-8 layers. Also, low-resolution motion tests of the camera choreography and 3D elements flying around the machines were refined until there was a well-paced flow to the spot that showcased the film clips.

Just got a new press release from yU+co discussing the over 550 shots they made for “Gamer”. In the movie there are actually two “Games”. The one most frequently seen in the trailers is “Slayers”, where death row inmates are controlled in a first-person shooter game. The less known one is “Society”, where real people are controlled in a sims-like world. All of this happens from “Simon”, the main character’s, room.
”Our prediction is that the interface is not limited to the desktop but is a virtual world that surrounds the user,” says Johnny Ellsworth, yU+co’s resident game guru. ”The interface is a fully immersive environment with graphics spread out in 3D space. The 360º walls house games, music, photos, video, chats, everything a teenager would access from his computer — like a giant 3D iPhone except it’s an iRoom.’
For yU+co., ”Gamer” provided a great opportunity to envision what the future will look like if we continue with current technology and cultural trends. ”In the future the lines will be blurred between games, films, television, and the internet. The four platforms will merge into one,” says Yu. ”Motion graphics is a storytelling medium that works for any digital platform and it will not be limited to just one. Whether it’s for commercials, films, television or gaming, we have been and will continue to design digital content that can be applied across all of them.”

yU+co was put in charge of creating the opening title sequence for Disney’s Race to Witch Mountain, and given the task of distilling the entire recorded history of UFO’s into a 3.5minute montage.
For example, yU+co treated some of the clips with film scratches and burns to simulate aging film stock from the 50’s. They also added microfiche animations on the sections that covered the1980’s, and overlaid TV scan-lines to many of the clips that belonged in the 1990’s and later.
