Workshop on Visualization of Large Scientific Data

In just a few weeks, the CINECA supercomputing centre in Bologna, Italy will be hosting a Workshop on Visualization of Large Scientific Data.

The scientific community is presently witnessing an unprecedented growth in the quality and quantity of data coming from simulations and real-world experiments. Moreover writing results of numerical simulations to disk files has long been a bottleneck in high-performance computing. To access effectively and extract the scientific content of such large-scale data sets (often sizes are measured in hundreds or even millions of Gigabytes) appropriate tools and techniques are needed. In-situ visualization libraries enable the user to connect directly to a running simulation, examine the data, do numerical queries and create graphical output while the simulation executes. It addresses the need of extreme scale simulation, eschewing the need to write data to disk. The workshop will bring together researchers, developers, computational scientists for cross-training and to discuss recent developments and future advancements in remote and in-situ visualization

I see that staff from Kitware (VTK, ParaView) will be there, and it seems they’ll be talking a lot about VisIt as well.  Both fabulous tools, but I find it interesting that CEI/Ensight isn’t mentioned anywhere…

Pixar designer Tony DeRose to speak at UCO

geriThe University of Central Oklahoma is sponsoring a talk from Tony DeRose, leader of the Pixar studios research group and creator of the character “Geri“. It’s a free event beginning at 4pm on October 7th.

“The reality is mathematics is essential for modern technology including cell phones, CDs, DVDs and of course, animated movies. It is mathematics that brings the characters you see in the animated films to life,” said Simmons.

DeRose is one of the major designers responsible for the character Geri, who appears in the Oscar winning short film “Geri’s Game,” as well as in “Toy Story II.”

EMBO Workshop on Visualizing Biological Data

vizbiIf you’re in Heidelberg, Germany during early March you might want to check out the VizBi conference on biological data visualization.

The goal of the workshop is to bring together, for the first time, researchers developing and using systems to visualize a broad range of biological data, including sequences, genomes, phylogenies, macromolecular structures, systems biology, microscopy, and magnetic resonance imaging. In selecting topics for this workshop, we have focused on the visualization of processed and annotated data in their biological context, rather than the processing of raw data.

They’ve got a long list of speakers, including a keynote by Ben Fry.  They’re currently accepting abstracts and applications.

New CGWorkshops on Matte Painting and Maya Scripting

cgsociety-workshopsCGSociety has announced a pair of new workshops available for enrollment.  First is “Matte Painting” form David Luong:

Matte Painter, compositor and VFX guru David Luong is back with his updated Matte Painting workshop. This is an intermediate to advanced level matte painting class using Adobe Photoshop as well as using AfterEffects and/or Nuke to composite your design into your final project using Maya. Beginners are welcome as topics covered and class discussions are personal and open to different levels of knowledge. Though it has some beginner’s topics, it will quickly get into more advanced areas.

The second is Maya Scripting, with both MELScript and Python.

Lead Creature Technical Director and Maya guru Todd Widup is back to l take you under the hood of Scripting in Maya with MELScript and Python. Todd will take you into the top layer of the programming guts and scripts in both MELScript as well as the newly introduced Python script within Maya. By opening artists to the power of scripting, they can enhance their workflow with new automated tools, create macros to do repeated functions, as well as create interfaces and learn to interact with the operating system.

Both classes start on September 7th, and run for 8 weeks.  Hit CGSociety for full details.
