Visual.ly Create goes Live

Visual.ly has already made news with their massive VC rounds and surprising popularity, and now they’ve taken the big plunge: Their tools for semi-automatic infographic creation are now public for anyone to use.

But this is just the beginning. Visual.ly Create will grow over time to include additional data feeds, designs, stories, and themes in the areas of sports, politics, economics, food, and more. We’ll even be opening it up to the community, so that you can create your own designs and themes. That’s when things get interesting.

Stop American Censorship: Stop SOPA & PIPA

A bit of a public service announcement here folks, but for the next day or two VizWorld will be joining the ranks of those opposed to the US censorship bills SOPA & PIPA thanks to CloudFlare’s new app.  For the next day or two, newcomers to the site will see the “censored” Version of VizWorld.  Simply clicking on any of the censored areas will reveal why, and allow the user to disable the effect.  It’ll only happen the first time a user visits so it’s not terribly annoying, although the reality of the internet if the bill passes is truly scary indeed.

If you’re not already familiar with the bills, visit the Stop American Censorship website.  In addition, you can help spread the word by sharing links to VizWorld to your friends (which will appear in their Censored form, helping to spread the word).

Visual.ly raises $2M to make your data pretty and interesting

Infographics website startup Visual.ly has just accomplished the impressive goal of raising $2M in venture capital.  It could just be proof that the dot-com bubble isn’t gone yet, or (more likely) proof that the “Next Big Thing” could be visualization.

“There are no tools for this type of thing. People are either creating really bad-looking visuals using Microsoft Applications [such as the native Windows app MS Paint] or they’re hiring a graphic designer, which takes time and money — it’s a hassle,” Visual.ly co-founder and CEO Stew Langille told VentureBeat. “So, we’re trying to create a tool that we can license out to the industry.”

Website Tweaks

In an attempt to stem the massive flood of spam comments that’s been coming in the last few weeks (I’ve gone from 1-2 a day to 10-15 an hour), I’ve made some configuration changes here on the site.  First off, all first comments are moderated (once you have a good comment on the site, you’re except from moderation.).  In addition, I’ve added a new plugin or two to block known bad apples.  If you visit and find yourself 403‘d, please let me know so I can modify the settings.

VizWorld.com Website Fix: Categories & Tags

Most of you probably never even noticed, but if you did, it’s fixed now.  In the upgrade to WordPress 3.1, it seems that my Categories & Tags quit working.  If you clicked on the “NVidia” Tag, you’ld get a single NVidia story instead of the list of stories.  Some tags would lead to 404 pages.

It’s all fixed now, so click away!

Impure Demonstration on Delicious Tags

If last week’s discussion of the new visualization programming language ‘Impure’ caught your eye, then check out the live demonstration they’ve posted where they visualize the most popular tags of a few loved website (hint hint).

In Impure there is an API module called DeliciousTagFromUrl that downloads a list of tags that people have being associating to an url on their Delicious account, and how many times each tag have been used. So, we used this module three times in order to get Table for each blog. Then we assemble in a new table containing all the tags and all its weights.

Finally we read the three NumberList (the lists with weights) and we plug them to the ComparativeProportionsTriple visualizator, which is perfect for this purposes. This one is a home made interactive visualization method .

A still of the resulting image is above.  I’m happy to see VizWorld scoring in 3D and News, but it’s neat to see how public perception (at least the delicious-tagging public) sees the three sites (VizWorld, FlowingData, and Infosthetics).
