Nvidia: Yield Problems are “Easing,” Fermi Doing Just Fine

NVidia has long held that the rumors of poor yield in the GF100 from TSMC were just that, rumors.  Today, however, it seems they are backpedaling a bit and saying that things are “finally getting better”.

This isn’t something Nvidia has wanted to talk a whole lot about, but according to recent statements made by David White, executive vice president and chief financial officer of Nvidia, things are starting to improve.

“Supply constraints are finally easing,” White explained during a quarterly conference call with financial analysts.

Of course, Better is never good enough.

“From a supply perspective, we wish we had more 40nm capacity,” Huang said. “We are working TSMC really closely. They are doing a fab job. Yields are improving,. Capacities are improving. But we are finding it hard to keep up. Everyone is clamoring to have Fermis out the door. We are working really hard to get Fermis out the door.”

GF100 yields below 50% at TSMC

If you thought last week was bad for Nvidia rumors, this week could be even worse as we get nearer the March 26th launch date. The rumor of the day is that the GF100 yields are below 50% at TSMC. This is an improvement over the 2% yields reported last year. 50% yields are in line with what was reported for ATI last year.

Since TSMC’s 40nm yield currently is still lower than 50%, Nvidia will block some of the graphics cores with problems on the card. As a result, the GeForce GTX 480 will only have 480 cores and GTX 470 only 448, the sources noted.

TSMC Responds: 40-nm yields are flat

tsmcDisputing news that came out earlier this week about the 40nm yields from TSMC dropping from 60% to 40%, claiming that the yields have not been effected.

AMD, Nvidia and others are impacted. In response to the reports, TSMC officials said: ”The 40-nm yield didn’t drop as reported. As a matter of fact, yield on the 40-nm process remained flat. TSMC is confident that the 40-nm yield will improve at the beginning of next year.”

Of course, 60% still isn’t a great yield.
