NVIDIA Tegra 2 Prototype Tablet Running Backbreaker at Google I/O 2010

Wow! This looks interesting! An Nvidia Tegra 2 tablet is being shown at Google I/O 2010.

Pleasant surprise at Google I/O to come across a brand new prototype from NVIDIA a Tegra 2 tablet. I tried to get do a device walk through on camera, but that was a no no, so you’ll have to settle for me telling you about the ports. This 8.9 inch tablet was running Android 2.1 with its 1Ghz Tegra 2 processor. It was also sporting a webcam & microphone and for connectivity on the left hand side of the device we have audio jacks, docking port connector and a microsd card slot. On the bottom we have some status LEDs for Power, Wifi and a lighting blot, not too sure what the lighting bolt LED was for, charging perhaps, hard to say. Moving around the device to the right we have two USB ports and the PSU all covered up with a silicon flap. On the top because it is Android after all we have back, menu and home we also have what appears to be a SIM card slot though it curiously looked a little bit too thin.

The unit measured around 1cm in thickness, but talking to Andrew from NVIDIA he did remind me that it is a protype and there are much thinner & lighter versions behind closed doors.

The game running was BackBreakers by NaturalMotion, it ran very smoothly which is a nice teaser to the beginning of the slew of Tegra 2 tablets we are expecting to see at Computex in two weeks.

Infographic: Tablets & iPad Data Visualized

A new infographic from John Kumahara and Jonathan Bonnell gathers up all of the available information about the Apple iPad sales into a fairly large graphic.

The graphic, included below, offers an interesting perspective on iPad data — think factoids like consumer expectations and adoption rates by state — that we may have otherwise overlooked (though updated sales and apps figures were released yesterday).

Here are some points of interest that stand out:

- The average price for an iPhone app is three dollars less than the price for an iPad app.

- 80% of iPad apps come with a price tag.

- There were 26,668 tweets per hour on the iPad at its peak.

See the graphic after the break.  My only real complaint is that the text is a bit difficult to read, a bit narrow in parts.  Other than that, some of the numbers are a bit confusing, such as the “Aided Awareness” section.  What does that mean?  And then the “Researched Online” section, is that how many people researched those devices? Or how many people bought the device based on their online research?

Review of Wacom’s Cintiq 21UX

Wacom has just released a new Cintiq tablet display, the Cintiq 21UX, and CGSociety took one for a test drive to document some of the new features.

The customizable, application-specific ExpressKeys on the Cintiq 21UX are a nice touch. Eight are located on each side of the display’s bezel. Pressing the top ExpressKey brings up an on-screen display showing the settings of all the ExpressKeys and Touch Strips. The close proximity of these tools to the actual work area is efficient and comfortable and minimises dependence on the keyboard without taking focus away from the pen hand. Also new to the Cintiq 21UX is the introduction of two user-defined, four-function Touch Strip Toggle buttons which control the function of their associated Touch Strip, located on the back of the bezel

Retails at $1999, and shipping later this month.

OLED Apple tablet PC in 2H10?

apple-logo-3Digitimes has information from Apple suppliers Foxconn, Quanta, and Pegatron that the long-rumored Apple Tablet is a reality, and will come in two versions:

  • 10.6 inch TFT LCD
  • 9.7 inch OLED Panel

Of course, it won’t be cheap.

Since 9.7-inch OLED panels are currently priced at about US$500 and panel costs normally account for about 30% of the device's total cost, Apple's 9.7-inch OLED tablet PC is expected to have a cost of about US$1,500-1,700 (based on today's prices), the sources estimated.

With price drops related to volume, it could come down to a retail of $2000 which could be driven down even lower if combined with 3G Telecom subsidies.

via Apple tablet PC reportedly delayed until 2H10, with OLED model now included.
