NVidia looks to have a big presence at SIGGRAPH this year (like very year I suppose). If you browse the show floow you’ll see them working with Autodesk, Adobe, Dassault, and others. In addition, they’ve got their Innovation Theater, Sketch Match , and the annual NVArt competition with CGSociety. Also this year they’ll have a series of “Tech Talks” that sound particularly interesting.
Highlighting the NVIDIA “Tech Talks” will be an expert panel discussion from 1:45 to 3:00 p.m. PDT, “VFX Trendspotting: Unlocking GPU Performance,” where attendees will be able to tap into the some of the most brilliant minds in visual effects R&D and learn how the GPU is being leveraged to enable dramatic performance gains in rendering, lighting, fluid and particle simulations. Attendees will learn more about how to integrate GPU acceleration into their VFX production pipelines.
Get all the details in the press release after the break.
The SIGGRAPH2011 committee has announced the first Keynote Speaker of the 2011 event in Vancouver, and it’s writer and creative-commons advocate Cory Doctorow.
“As an author, scholar, future-thinker, and creator, Cory Doctorow brings a lot to the table that should be of immense interest to the SIGGRAPH audience,” said Peter Braccio, SIGGRAPH 2011 Conference Chair from the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute. “His dynamic vision and creativity are certain to be interspersed throughout his presentation and will be a conference highlight for everyone.”
Now, I’m a bit puzzled about this choice, and frankly a bit disappointed. I love Cory’s writing, I loved Little Brother, but I don’t know of anything in his past or present related to Computer Graphics, Visual Effects, or Animation. His choice as a Keynote speaker seems to reflect a growing trend in the SIGGRAPH community towards “all the stuff around graphics and movies” (Sound, story, distribution) rather than any core development of the art and technology.
Or maybe I’m just getting cranky in my old age. What do you think?
The ACM has just put out the call for entries in this year’s SIGGRAPH2011 Real-Time Live event, where people submit examples of Real-Time rendering work and get a chance to demonstrate it live on-stage.
Building on its debut at the SIGGRAPH 2009 Computer Animation Festival, Real-Time Live! expects to continue its trend of growth and excellence at SIGGRAPH 2011. We are seeking cutting-edge examples of real-time graphics and simulations, including:
Interactive data visualization and information graphics
As long as the submission is interactively controlled, rendered in real time, and repeatable for a live audience, it will be considered. Accepted work will be demonstrated live on a PC or game console.
Even if you don’t plan to submit anything, make sure to check out last year’s demos in this short roundup video.
