RealD, Toshiba Run ‘Carmen In 3D’ Promos

In what sounds like a pretty interesting use of 3D, RealD and the London Opera House have teamed up with Toshiba to package 3D BluRay releases of ‘Carmen in 3D’ with select TV’s, PC’s, and BluRay players.  Currently only viewable in RealD Theaters, the Play format is ideally suited for 3D work due to it’s fixed working area and limited range of motion.

A co-production of RealD and London’s Royal Opera House, CARMEN IN 3D gives viewers the best seat in the house, taking them on a magic carpet ride into the heart of the production – immersing them into this exciting story of love, jealousy and betrayal.

CARMEN IN 3D is a dazzling film, filled with some of the best-loved music ever written – and performed by a world-class cast. With English subtitles throughout, it is the perfect event for life-long opera fans and first-timers alike! Available exclusively in RealD theaters beginning in March 2011.

Polaroid Partners with RealD for New 3D Glasses Line

What you see above is a new design for the classic RealD 3D Glasses used in theaters around the world, created by Polaroid to fix several of the problems with the current design.

Polaroid claims the curved surfaces provide a superior viewing area for large, theater-caliber screens, and ample room for prescription lenses underneath. Polaroid points out that the lenses offer UV protection as well, should you wish to jaunt around outside wearing them.

Not to mention they actually look pretty cool.

RealD IPO raises about $200M

This week RealD has it’s IPO (initial public offering) that opened at $16/share, and managed to pull in an impressive $200M over 12.5Million shares, up from the expected 10.75 million.  Analysts are mixed as to what this means for 3D movies, as more 3D movies keep coming out but sales seem to be dropping (Toy Story 3 only pulled in 56% of revenue from 3D).  In the announcements, I found this interesting little tidbit on how RealD has managed to edge out all their competition in becoming the #1 source of theater 3D.

RealD has vaulted to success by offering theater owners a free upgrade to 3D, and then charging them a license fee. That fee had been 75 cents per attendee, but it has since fallen to between 40 cents and 50 cents, BTIG said in a report.

Hollywood studios are subsidizing the cost of RealD’s glasses at theaters, but BTIG said it expects Hollywood to shift that burden to RealD and the theater owners.

Well now you know why you’re paying extra for those 3D tickets, it’s straight to RealD to subsidize the upgrade.

Toshiba announces partnership with RealD for 3D TV’s

More 3D TV’s from CES, this time from Toshiba. They’ve partnered with RealD to create a new line of televisions called “Regza”, which will bring HD 3D LCD’s to us in 2010.  It is still, however, active stereo, unlike the passive polarized stereo RealD uses in theaters.

The RealD Format is a proprietary version of a side-by-side 3D format that multiplexes a left eye and right eye 3D image stream into a single channel for delivery of HD 3D content to any 3D-enabled display type – plasma, LCD or DLP. The RealD Format uses a unique set of proprietary filters and other technologies making it compatible with today’s HD infrastructure for high quality 3D delivered via cable, satellite, packaged media or the internet.
