The Conversation Prism v2.0 by Brian Solis

conversation-prismAs social media systems gather strength and money as both a fun way for us to talk to each other and a great way for brands to specifically target individuals, it’s becoming more complicated to explain and understand how information moves amongst the various networks.  Brian Solis & Jesse Thomas have taken it upon themselves to map the results in a fascinating “flower” design and called it “The Conversation Prism”.

When Jesse Thomas of JESS3 and I initially mapped “the conversation,” we recognized that the act of categorizing social networks within a visually rich graphic would be momentary at best, demanding endless iterations in order to accurately document evolving and shifting online conversations as well as the communities that promote them.

My goal was to observe, analyze, dissect, and present the dynamics of conversations, how and where they transpired.

If you look closely you’ll see it consists of several rings that he calls Halos showing the various degrees of interaction between the user (the center) and networks (outer edges).

As an added bonus, you can buy it as an 18″x24″ poster from their website.

Posters for People Who Love Data + Design : FlowingPrints

flowingprintsCapitalizing on the success of WallStats & the popularity of infographics, Nathan Yao of FlowingData has created a new website, FlowingPrints, where you can purchase large posters of some of his most popular infographics.

FlowingPrints makes original posters — to show you the stories in data — with both traditional and abstract data designs you can appreciate.

We put data in print, because computer screens are too small. Online stuff is great, but it’s fleeting. You glance, scan, and browse when you’re online. You look, examine, and read when it’s in print.

Our prints are not just about aesthetics, however. FlowingPrints is a collaboration between graphic designers and statisticians. We are just as careful in our analysis as we are in our design.

Currently only 2 are available “Education: Enrollment and Dropouts” and “College High”, and you can get them both for $60.

SIGGRAPH Posters (101-119)

Posters are always a big part of SIGGRAPH, showcasing work that’s not far enough along for a full paper but still worthy of showing off and discussing.  The posters are still going up at SIGGRAPH, but I snapped pics of the existing ones and I’m gonna show them here.   There’s alot of them, so I’ll be putting them up in batches.  See the gallery after the break.

Also, if any of these posters are yours then give us more info!  Names, details, links to your own webpages!

Death and Taxes 2010 Poster Released

Jess Bachman’s Death & Taxes posters are an annual favorite, and he’s just now introduced the 2010 edition.

I must say I was very excited to get this project finished because it wasn’t just the same old Bush administration budget this year. This is Obama’s first official budget. This is his plan for the future, beyond the headlines, beyond the press releases. The federal budget is where the true story, once the rhetoric falls away.

In addition, he’s running a contest this year to give away a poster a day to someone mentioning it on TWitter.  If you’re not a lucky winner, or just feel like doing your part to keep the project alive, you can buy it for $24.
