Olympics Twitter Tracker from Stamen Design

Stamen Design, creators of the fun MTV Music Awards twitter tracker a while back, has a new interactive twitter tracker online at NBC’s website where you can follow the firehose of twitter traffic related to the Olympics.  From their blog post:

I’ve been feeling for some time now that the data visualization space is about to go completely bananas, where “bananas” means “taken for granted” in the sense that no major cultural event will feel complete without a corresponding live data visualization. The breadth and depth of the conversation happening on twitter around the Olympics is just blowing my mind, as tragedy and farce and pop culture and stardom roll together—but remain distinct and understandable—in a display that’s changing minute-by minute as I look at it.

2010 Winter Olympics Scorecard

iDashboards is tracking the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics using their own interactive dashboard software. The interactive site allows you to choose which event to view, such as alpine skiing, figure skating, or others. The dashboard will then show you who won which medals. To the left is the total medal count by country. When you click on the country, it will tell you in which events the medals were won. To the right, it compares the medal count this year with the medal count in Torino in 2006. To me it looks like a good way to provide a useful tool while also marketing your product. Click on over to explore the capabilities of the software.

Gold Medals in the Winter Olympics

The New York TImes has created an interactive map of the Winter Olympic gold medalists. Simply click on a sport, such as Figure Skating, to bring up a list of events. Then select one of the events under that sport – such as women’s figure skating, to see a total of the Winter Olympic gold medal since the inception of the games. You can click the arrows to go forwards and backwards in time to see who won the Olympic gold medal for women’s figure skating in 1976 (Dorothy Hamill, in case your wondering). From the interactive infographic:

Some countries have dominated Olympics events for years. Norway, Sweden and Finland, for example, have won virtually all the gold medals for cross country skiing since 1924. The maps below show the current and previous gold medalists in the Vancouver Olympic events.

3-D Interactive Map of Olympic Venues

The New York TImes has created an interactive 3-D map of the Olympic venues that will be occurring soon in Vancouver, Canada. Like any 3-D application, you can rotate, pan, and zoom into the map. Clicking on one of the four sites will cause you to load up a more detailed map of the venue. You have four sites to choose from, including Whistler Olympic Park, Whistler Mountain, Cypress Mountain, and Vancouver. Once you navigate into one of these four sites, you are able to see the actual places where the events are occurring. For example, you can see the Richmond Olypic Oval building where the speed skating will be held on the second day of the competition.

Infographic: Olympic Medal Count

The United States has taken home 2,511 Olympic medals. Second place belongs to the Soviet Union with 1,204, while Great Britain takes third with 736. Those numbers will change over the next few weeks, but it is certain that the world’s richest countries will take home the largest share of medals. But what happens when you divide the medal count by the GDP of the country? Portfolio.com has an interactive infographic that shows the outcome.
