Offtopic: A family in need this Holiday

I saw this on Twitter today, in my hometown, and had to share. If you don’t see the picture then it’s the sad story of a lonely kid dodging rush hour traffic in downtown Jackson, MS, belonging to a huge family of 9 kids ranging from 5 months to 14 years, in a broken home missing basic utilities like Gas. The guy trying to help has contacts in real estate willing to fix the place up, but they need money for supplies and basic equipment.

So take that little bit of coffee money or Dirty Santa cash and instead use it to help a family that really needs it this holiday season. It gets down to freezing tonight, so time is of the essence here. Give them a call at 601-573-9728 and see how you can help.

Offtopic: Relic developer Brian Wood Heroically Perishes

A bit of sad tangential news here, but one of the Lead Developers at Relic Entertainment, currently working on the next Company of Heroes game, perished this weekend in a tragic car accident, but managed to become the hero himself by sacrificing himself to save his wife and unborn child.

With an out-of-control Chevy Blazer bearing down on him, the 33-year old North Vancouver man braked and swerved his Subaru wagon so that he would take the force of the head-on collision, saving his wife of five years, pregnant with their first baby..

“All the policeman say that if we had hit the car head-on all of us would be dead. At the very last second (Brian) braked really hard and turned right so that he would be put in the path of the SUV and not me and the baby, and that is the only thing that saved us both.

RIP Brian Wood.  You can send your condolences here.

Last Day to Vote for Make JM a Memory [Offtopic]

I wanted to take another step away from our usual content and ask that you head over to the Pepsi Refresh project and vote for the “Make Juvenile Myositis a Memory” project. I know someone (names withheld for privacy) with a child with JM, and it’s a hard disease for not only the kids but the parents. Today is the last day for voting, and they are bouncing between #1 and #3. #1 and #2 both receive $250k, so we just need to keep it out of #3!

With the possible money they could win:

This project will allow the CureJM foundation to continue critical research. Funding the center of excellence will allow JM researchers to combine clinical evaluation with drug research targeted at combating the devastating effects of this disease. Many researchers believe that there is also a genetic predisposition to autoimmune diseases. As such, they feel that a child afflicted with JM is likely to have a blood relative who suffers from another autoimmune disease such as diabetes or arthritis. Continuing to fund this vital research is of paramount importance to fulfill CureJM’s goal to make sure that no child suffers another day with JM.

They’ve in the running for the big reward, the $250. Just visit their website, or click the badge here to cast your vote. You can vote every day, and help find a cure.

Resource Of The Week WARNING: I’m sick and tired…

Today is Wednesday, home of our usual “Resource Of The Week” post where we pick some book and share it with you.  Today while browsing Amazon to find something suitable, I once again ran into what is quickly growing over Amazon faster than Kudzu and frankly, I’m sick and tired of it and can’t take it anymore.

As a word of warning, I depart from our usual visualization and graphics oriented coverage and bring you a word of warning about “VDM Publishing”, “BetaScript”, and “AlphaScript”, three companies that are colluding to turn my favorite online reseller of books into a junkyard of scraped internet content.  If you want to know the full details, read after the break.

For those of you who don’t care, then be sure to tune in again next week and I’ll have a real book for you :)
