Using data taken from the popular Nike+ sensor, students under the guidance of Nicholas Felton tried to parse it out and find some interesting stuff. What they found was not just interesting patterns, but odd (and often hilarious) bad data showing runners vanishing, teleporting, and traveling through time.
These, of course, are glitches in the technology. As Shaw explains, interference probably knocked the altitude meter off base and the disappearing runners didn’t actually disappear, their Nike+ sensors just ran out of batteries. “Presumably [these are] all problems that the data crunchers at Nike wrestle with,” Felton says. And, as Felton’s students learned, it’s the job of the designer to tell that story, in this case as a cautionary tale: If you think Nike+ is the ultimate measure of your workout, take it from the guy who time traveled, and think again.
While nobody made what could have been an awesome Tardis joke, I’m sure the students got a good crash-course in data cleaning. Unfortunately the article doesn’t cover it very much. Nonetheless, it’s some pretty visuals.

Big Lazy Robot has posted a “Making Of” video on Vimeo for the impressive nike commercial “Exploit Yourself“. While there’s no dialog or technical data, it does show some detail shots of the model they created for the runner, some of the storyboards and sketches they created, and wireframes of some key scenes.

A spec commercial for Nike, created by the guys at Big Lazy Robot Visual Effects studio, shows a mechanized free-runner performing some death-defying stunts over rooftops, elevator shafts, and dark alleyways.
Our wish was to show off the nerve and spark and freshness of the city with the strength and power of modern sport competition, all in a whole 3d environment.‘Exploit Yourself’ talks about pushing your limits just for the sake of it.
Who said life at the city was placid?

At the Nike 6.0 BMX Open Tour, in Chicago today and tomorrow, Total Immersion will be showing a fun Augmented Reality game based on scratch-off cards.
Every visitor to the Nike tent will receive a scratch-off card, offering a chance to win a pair of Nike 6.0 shoes and additional prizes – all based on the spinning wheels of the first-ever AR-generated slot machine. To activate the slot machine, the attendee displays the card in front of a camera, and his or her image is projected onto a larger screen. On screen, the card morphs into a big 3D slot machine that then appears in the attendee’s hand. The slot machine counts itself down and automatically spins – and if three matching images appear, it lights up and rings to celebrate the winner. Several winners will be declared daily.
Initially at the Chicago Nike6.0 event, this will be touring with the Dew Tour in Boston, Portland, Salt Lake City, and Orlando. The AR system is also available on the Nike website from any webcam-enabled computer, although you will need a Spectator Guide to use it. I figure those will be available online as well in a day or two.
