Geo-Cosmos: Gigantic Globe OLED Display

Now this is just too cool to pass up.  The Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation in Tokyo has a new display from Mitsubishi Electric called “Geo-Cosmos” that combines 10,362 OLED display panels into a giant live-updating sphere 6-meters across.

The globe was installed to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the museum, as a result of Executive Director Mamoru Mohri “wanting to share with people the sight of our beautiful Earth as seen from space.” The display features constantly updated satellite images of the earth. There are also interactive “Geo-Scope” touch-screen panels which allow visitors to browse images and data collected from all over the world. Something particularly interesting was a simulation showing the point of origin and eventual dispersion of the March 11 tsunami following the great earthquake.

Mitsubishi to start selling the 100″ Diamond Vision OLED Display

What’s that you say, that 65″ TV you’ve got isn’t big enough?  How about the new 100″ Diamond Vision OLED display from Mitsubishi?  They claim they’ll begin selling it in 100″ and higher sizes next week (September 21st) for those of you with deep pockets.

The Diamond Vision is bright (1,200cd/m²) and has a good contrast (twice as better as LED, says Mitsubishi) – so it can be used in brightly-lit areas such as airports or stations. The OLEDs were jointly developed by Mitsubishi and Pioneer.

They do this my manufacturing small modules that are 234mm-square, and 128-pixels square.  Unfortunately, each pixel is approximately 3mm in size, so you have to stand a ways back.

No idea what the price on this will be yet, but no doubt it will be reserved for the various Jumbotron-stadiums of the world.

Mitsubishi WD-82738: 82 Inches of 3D TV For $3800

Mitsubishi has just issued a press release about a few new televisions they’re bringing to market, and it includes what very well might be the largest 3D-capable Television on the market at 82 inches.

“3D is a large screen, immersive experience, and we're proud to offer consumers the most affordable line-up of 3D TVs available today, in cinema-like 60, 65, 73, and 82-inch screen sizes,” said Max Wasinger, executive vice president of sales and marketing, Mitsubishi Digital Electronics America. “3D represents the highest level and most advanced form of home entertainment, and we clearly see our 3D DLP Home Cinema TVs playing a key role in meeting consumers craving for the best, most advanced 3D home theater experience.”

Now, these are DLP televisions, so they’re not the classy slim LCD models making the rounds today.  There’s also no information on just what type of 3D technology they’re using, aside from “the same core DLP technology used in the vast majority of 3D movie theaters”, so it could be passive stereo.  The new models include 16-speaker 5.1 channle Doly Digital surround sound, and StreamTV internet media for Flickr, Pandora, Facebook, the New York Times, and more.

The TV’s range in price from $1,199 to $4,499.

The 149 inch OLED-Display from Mitsubishi at ISE-2010

The guys from Oled-Display.net are in Amsterdam at the ISE-2010 event and got some pics and video of Mitsubishi’s massive 149-inch OLED Display.  The resolution is only 1088×640, but the high brightness and wide viewing angle make it great for digital signage applications.

Targeting for market in 2011, see their site for more pictures and video.

Mitsubishi shows Huge 149-inch OLED TV at ISE 2010

At the recent CEATAC-2009 in Japan, Mitsubishi introduced their new OLED concept that is built from small 10cm x 10cm square units.  At the upcoming ISE-2010 in Amsterdam, they will demonstrate a massive combination of these that creates a 149-inch OLED television.  At an impressive 1920mm x 3264mm, it’s considerably larger than any existing commercial product.

Sadly, the screen resolution is a mere 1088×640, making pixels 3mm in size.  So while beautiful and bright, don’t sit too close.
