Markerless Augmented Reality in JCPenny’s Virtual Dressing Room

An impressive new offering from JCPenny and Seventeen Magazine allows teenager to virtually try on clothes via a markerless augmented reality shopping website without any of the hurdles of their predecessors.  Utilizing technology from metaio, the “virtual dressing room” simply allows the user to stand in front of the PC without any special printed markers, and the image recognition algorithms take over from there and overlay the selected items of clothes over the display.

“The application is a true breakthrough in online product visualization, as clothes are automatically overlaid on the consumer`s real-time video image through their webcam,” said Kristine Welker, vice president of sales and marketing for Hearst Magazines Digital Media. “With the help of our exclusive retail partner JCPenney, the virtual dressing room makes online shopping easy and viral: with a simple wave of a hand, shoppers can select, rate and share their top picks with friends via Facebook or email, and even purchase the items directly from jcp.com.”

An impressive use of Augmented Reality, and a huge win for markerless AR.  Full press release after the break.

YOUReality Launches Augmented Reality Ecommerce Platform

Before YOUReality

After YOUReality

How many times has this happened to you:  You’re out shopping for some new piece of furniture (a Couch, curtains, a TV maybe) and you find what you think you like, and it seems like it would fit perfectly.  Then you get it home and it doesn’t look anywhere near as good as you thought.  That problem may be a thing of the past thanks to a new product from YOUReality that combines augmented reality technology from MetaIO with shopping to let you see your purchases in your home before you buy.

“YOUReality gives cool technology relevance in the world of commerce by driving retail sales through increased conversion rate ” says YOUReality founder Michelle Fallon. “Retail Visualization takes the guesswork out of the visual aspects of shopping making the buying decision faster and easier. Retail Visualization for ecommerce allows product visualization in a web store and then adds the selected items directly to the shopping cart or wish list ” she says.

junaio Augmented Reality for iPhone now Available

junaio
It’s a bit later than previously expected but junaio, the world’s first social augmented reality platform, is now available in the iTunes App Store for all iPhone platforms. From the press release:

With junaio, metaio is putting the power of its augmented reality technology – which has been used by industry giants such as Volkswagen, LEGO and Popular Science plus hundreds of other companies – in the hands of everyday consumers. The worldwide film company Focus Features has partnered with junaio to place memorable characters from its hit animated movies 9 and Coraline (the latter feature already available on DVD through Universal Studios Home Entertainment) on the platform to allow users to interact with the creations.

Unlike other applications that attempt to create new social networking communities, junaio is designed to tie existing platforms together with augmented reality based social interactions. Users can insert an (animated) 3D object into a photo taken with their iPhone  and upload it to Facebook, or augment images that others have posted. The technology will soon be available on other smart phone platforms such as Android and Symbian.

Go get the app in the iTunes App Store.  You can read the full press release and see some sample video after the break.

junaio_screenA new press release from metaio announced that they will be launching a new Augmented Reality application for the iPhone, named junaio, on November 2nd. From the release:
