LG shows World’s Largest 3D Display at SID 2010

LG will be showing an 84-inch 3-D LCD TV at the Society for Information Display 2010 conference in Seattle, WA this week. The 84-inch 3-D LCD TV does not come in at a standard resolution of 1920×1080. Instead the 3-D TV has a resolution that is 3840 x 2160, which is ultra high definition (UHD).

However, there are three problems that I can see with this screen already. The first problem is that it is likely to be expensive. The second problem is that while it is nice to have such a large 3-D screen, you still need something to drive the screen. There are no 3-D Blu-Ray players that can output at that resolution. Finally, you need content to put on the screen. There is only one 3-D Blu-Ray title that is out right now, and it is not in 3840 x 2160 format.

LG will show several more interesting displays at the SID 2010. LG Display will present its advanced technologies including the 10.1-inch curved LCD with slim glass; the world’s thinnest TV panel which measures just 2.6mm in thickness; a 15.6-inch notebook LCD product that realizes the world’s lowest power consumption levels; a 9.7-inch color e-paper display scheduled to begin mass production within the year; and a 19-inch flexible e-paper.

LG set to lead the global 3D TV market

The LG LX9500 is the world’s first Full LED 3-D TV. The 55-inch model utilizes 1,200 LEDs, and 480 Hz refresh rate. The body of the LX9500 has a depth of just 22.3mm and also has a slim 16mm bezel. To achieve the 3-D effect, the LX9500 utilizes shutter glass technology.

But that is not all. LG is the No. 2 maker of televisions in the world. They see the growing demand for 3-D TVs and want to lead the way. In fact, in a recent press release they said:

LG is committed to securing a dominant position in this fast growing market expected to surpass 80 million units by 2014, and aiming to achieve 25 percent share of 3D market in 2010.

Sky TV acquiring 15,000 3D TV’s?? Not really.

Earlier this week, you could have thought Britain’s Sky TV was single-handedly funding the 3D Television movement thanks to a new press release from LG touting a massive sale of 15,000 3D television sets they plan to deploy across the UK to promote their new 3D content.  You may remember the lackluster reception they got from their last attempt, and it looks like they’ve learned their lesson and will have more venues (many more) to hit a wider audience.

“LG wants to enable more customers to experience 3D TV technology in action,” said Havis Kwon, Executive Vice President and head of the LCD division of LG. “Watching live 3D sports broadcasts in public areas brings fans as close to the game as possible without having to step into the stadium. These partnerships will help consumers become more familiar with 3D TVs and that can only be a positive for the industry and innovation.”

Well, LG has backpedaled a bit on that and released a new statement saying that’s not really what is happening.

Today, however, LG said that figure was “inaccurate”. Sky, it said, isn’t buying a warehouse full of 3D TVs, after all. Instead, it is “helping support its commercial customers purchase TVs direct from a UK third party”.

In other words, it’s working with pubs to encourage them to buy 3D TVs. Not to mention the dozens of pairs of 3D glasses they’ll need to allow boozers to enjoy three-dimensional soccer action over a pint or two.

I gotta admin, that makes more sense.  I doubt many pubs will take them up on it, unless Sky offers some huge discounts or reimbursements to make it happen.  I think they’ld have more luck if they moved beyond ‘commercial customers’ and into mainstream, offering all of their customers big discounts after agreeing to a 2-year contract (think Cell-phone subsidies).

LG Infinia Ads by Framestore

The new ads for the 3D Ready, LED, Slim-bezel, internet connected LG Infinia television showcase the work of Framestore in animating clouds of butterflies, tree-climbing elephants, and friendly fish in the trio of ads.

In Butterflies, the main challenge was to create thousands of butterflies that looked real as a swarm, whilst retaining the intrinsic beauty that these fascinating insects possess, particularly during flight. The 3D team had to find the right balance between naturally chaotic flying and choreographed flying that could neatly tell the ad’s story of ‘infinite flow’. Caution was taken to ensure the butterflies didn’t become too stylised and bird-like, especially in the more crowded shots. The opening hero butterflies were hand animated for a smooth and organic feel, but the wider shots used a particle system to disperse the insects when they begin to number in the thousands. Range of colour and attention to detail were crucial, so the team created unique butterfly designs and added touches like rendering a fine layer of fur to avoid a plastic or solid look.

See all three ads in the video below.

Another entry in the tiny but expensive OLED TV space comes from LG, who will be releasing their 15″ OLED TV in Europe for a whopping 1999 € (roughly $2700).  From the opening paragraph of their press release:

LG Electronics (LG), a leading global supplier and technology leader in consumer electronics, brings in Austria a TV to the latest generation on the market. The only 3mm deep and 15 inches wide 15EL9500 is equipped with the latest OLED technology (Organic Light Emitting Diode) and for total television experience of the future. With a sharp contrast from 10.000.000:1, a reaction time of 0.001 ms and an extremely low power consumption, is one of LG OLED worldwide as one of the finest quality, technologically TV. The design and high-tech device comes in early May on the Austrian market.

Translated with Google Translate

Don’t know about you, but I find it hard to justify that much money for a 15″ TV running at only 1366×768, even if it is OLED and has a 10Million:1 contrast ratio.
