NVIDIA brings GPUDirect to Video

At IBC last week, NVidia announced that they expanded their impressive GPUDirect technology to include their video processing systems, possibly reducing most current multi-frame delay systems down to real-time processing.

NVIDIA and our partners are redefining what’s possible in real-time video production,” said Greg Estes, industry executive, Media & Entertainment, NVIDIA. “Enabling lower latency solutions for processing real-time video streams will benefit not just those working in broadcast and production facilities, but also applications in manufacturing, healthcare and government agencies.”

Just like the CUDA counterpart, the result is direct video-to-system memory access without lengthy multistage copies, reducing complexity and code execution times.

YUVsoft Depth from Motion demonstrated at IBC

Russian company YUVsoft has a new After Effects plugin that can analyze video footage to create dynamic depth maps, making 2D to 3D conversion faster and more accurate.

YUVsoft’s Depth from Motion uses multiparameter projective transformations to analyse camera motion ensuring that zoom, scene rotation and camera pans are correctly processed.Slow motion scenes are automatically detected the process continue to work flawlessly.

The first picture above is from a 2D input sequence. The second one shows the final depth map created from camera motion during the shot. To reach that result, several steps are needed. The first step is to estimate motion from the first four frames and to use the obtained motion vectors to compute the camera motion parameters.

The plugin will be demonstrated at IBC later this week (Booth 11.F74).

NVidia’s newest Quadro Digital Video Pipeline at IBC

Tomorrow at IBC, NVidia will be demonstrating their latest Quadro Digital Video Pipeline in their booth, demonstrating how the new Fermi-driven Quadros can realy boost the performance.  They’ll have the new 3D Vision Pro system onsite as well for you to try, and be showcasing some of the never-before available features.  Such as:

The recently introduced, new NVIDIA Quadro 5000 and Quadro 4000 GPUs enable faster computational performance across a broad range of visualization applications, including Adobe Premiere Pro CS5 software, shattering previous benchmarks2. With Adobe Premiere Pro software CS5, version 5.0.2, users can now experience even richer, more vivid image quality with the broadest dynamic range and support for 30-bit color fidelity (10-bits per color; available only on Quadro GPUs). Featuring more graphics memory than any other products in their class, the NVIDIA Quadro 5000 (with 2.5 GB) and Quadro 4000 (with 2 GB) professional graphics solutions benefit anyone working with complex video production projects, including ultra high resolution 4K video streams such as RED.

Live editing and preview of HD stereo frames, and 4K video.  Nice stuff.  I saw it at SIGGRAPH, and to be able to do it with a single simple computer with a nice video card, rather than a rack full of specialized equipment, is a real game-changer.

Full release after the break.

Stergen 2D-3D conversion demonstrated at IBC

At IBC this year, Stergen will be launching a new 2d-3d conversion software that will convert live 2D video into stereo 3D video real-time.

Stergen’s real-time conversion software includes Stergen Arena, which connects to a single, live 2D camera output to produce live stereo 3D video from sports arenas and mobile video units; and Stergen Studio, for use in broadcast studios or cable head-ends to convert live, 2D video programs to stereo 3D in real time.

I’m still pretty wary of all of these automatic 2D-to-3D conversion systems, seems they run the risk of squashing 3D in the home with damage similar to what Clash of the Titans did to 3D in theaters.  Given the choice between poorly done 3D and regular 2D, will people really pick 3D?

Assimilate to demo RED Workflow at IBC

assimilate-redAnother announcement from Assimilate, this time that they’ll be demonstrating 4K RED workflow with Scratch at the IBC09 in Amsterdam.

As RED’s first partner for a 4K post workflow, ASSIMILATE set the post-production standard with SCRATCH for the needed real-time 4K post workflows – simplified ingest of native REDCODE files, streamlined end-to-end workflow, conform, color grading, finishing and mastering.

Now SCRATCH continues that trend with the first support for RED’s latest RED colour science and the latest update from RED – the RED ROCKET board with Quad DVI and Dual Link HD-SDI.

Come see Rocket Science: ASSIMILATE and RED at IBC 09. RED’s Ted Schilowitz and ASSIMILATE’s Lucas Wilson are presenting the latest in red hot, high-rez imagery and the first showing of RED ROCKET in action with SCRATCH. Uncompressed and uncompromising – 4K workflow, latest RED color science, RED ROCKET, and SCRATCH. See rocket science live.

It will be Saturday, September 12 at the RAI Auditorium, from 1-2:30pm.

Creating 3D Content tutorials at IBC09

ibc2009Monday, September 14th will be “D Cinema Day” at IBC09, focusing on the entire processing of generating stereoscopic 3D for films.  Chaired by Phil Streather, CEO of Principal Large Format, the day-long session will cover introductory material, previs, image capture, and finally editing stereo film.

The purpose of our programme on D Cinema Day at IBC 09 is to ensure that people are aware of the latest tools in 3D content creation and editing, how they can be used, and what benefits they can bring to a project. Not everybody can afford current high end 3D post production tools. But there are alternatives out there that are cheaper and more accessible to smaller or independent production companies, and our aim is to showcase some of them to an audience that might so far have limited or no experience of 3D movie-making. The more people who can have access to tools to make good 3D the better.
