VANLO – Interactive exploration of aligned biological networks

vanloResearchers at the “Institut fur Mathematik und Informatik” have released a new software project called VANLO, for Visualization of Aligned Networks with Layout Optimization.

In addition to displaying the intra-network connectivities, we also provide insightinto how the individual networks relate to each other by placing aligned entities on top of each other in separatelayers. We optimize the layout of the entire alignment graph in a global fashion that takes into account inter- aswell as intra-network relationships.

The layout algorithm includes a step of merging aligned networks into onegraph, laying out the graph with respect to application-specific requirements, splitting the merged graph againinto individual networks, and displaying the network alignment in layers. In addition to representing the data ina static way, we also provide different interaction techniques to explore the data with respect toapplication-specific tasks.

You can download the software at their website.

StatPlot puts Sports Stats Visualizations in Users Hands

A new website “StatPlots.com”, from the folks at the StatSheet Network, allows users to create visualizations of their massive collection of sports data in some fun and beautiful ways.  Including the usual visualization tools (linegraph, bar graph, pie chart), they’ve also got a few new interesting tools for animating the graphs over multiple datasets.

A great example of the “Democratization of Data”, similar to the aims of the Data.gov project.  See the above chart in interactive form, after the break.

The State Of Unemployment Across US

No surprise that unemployment figures are the focus of alot of visualizations these days, but Applicant has a great collection of employment/unemployment statistics from January 99-present on all 50 states.

However, the state of the current job market can’t be ignored. To help you better understand the labor force in all of the 50 states, we’ve compiled an easy to scan breakdown of the 50 states that includes data on employment and unemployment.  Why not check out the state of unemployment where you live?

Lots of interesting stuff you can gleam from this besides just raw “the economy has tanked”.  Things like the spike in Mississippi & Lousiana in the Summer of 2005.  What happened there? Katrina.
