Winner Announced: Design an Infographic About Energy

GOOD has announced the winners of their ‘Design an Infographic about Energy’ contest, with the winner being Jamie Granger with his piece above.

The winner of the overall prize is Jamie Granger, whose piece is above (view it larger here). Granger’s tracing of who uses oil and how it gets around the world helped really make clear our global fossil fuel usage. His piece will appear in our energy issue, along with winning a subscription and a T-shirt.

Transparency: How Many Banks Are Having Problems?

Over at Good they take a look at the rising number of failing banks in the US, and have a simple infographic showing the meteoric rise in the last two years as a result of the economic recession.

Each quarter, the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation releases the number of banks it feels might need to be bailed out by the government. And though signs continue to point to the recession nearing its end, problems at banks continue to grow rapidly. This is a look at the number of problem banks on the FDIC list for the first quarter of the last 10 years, along with the total assets controlled by those banks.

Infographics About the New Health-care Bill

GOOD magazine recently held a contest asking people to contribute infographics explaining the recently passed US health-care bill.  Well now, the entries are in and they’ve posted them on their website.

Only 7 entries are shown, varying from a full-page basic bar chart to other more complex and intricate designs pulling in voting trends, funding sources, and state-by-state breakdowns of the impact.

View them all at their site.

GOOD Contest: Create an Infographic About Neighborhoods

GOOD Magazine has announced their next Infographic contest, with the details on their site:

As you may know, our next issue is the Neighborhoods issue. We’ve asked for and received tons of help from you all in thinking of ideas. But we’ll be honest, we’re having a hard time thinking of topics for our infographics to be included in the issue. There will be some, but we’re turning to you for support. Can you make an infographic—locally or nationally focused—that sums up something interesting about the contrast between different neighborhoods (say, ethnicity, income, education level, anything else), or what makes your individual neighborhoods so special?

So if you have an idea, now’s your chance!  Publicity and a free subscription could be yours, if you can conjure up your submission by March 9th.

Infographic: The 10 Most Expensive Pieces of Art Ever Sold

GOOD has a new “Transparency” online showing the 10 most expensive pieces of art ever sold, including the recent record-holder “Walking Man I” from Alberto Giacometti.  I don’t fully understand the graphic, their choice of black and white silhouettes instead of photographs and the mapping of scale on a 6-foot basis all seems somewhat arbitrary and unhelpful.  Nonetheless, I link it here for you to see for yourself.
