Flow-3D Software to Feature Built-In EnSight 10

Great news from CEI today, they’ve just annouced that the new Flow-3D CFD system will support advanced post-processing and volume rendering animation right in the GUI, thanks to EnSight 10.

“The integration of EnSight 10 will offer our users unprecedented capability to easily develop the compelling, dynamic images they need to conduct more thorough analysis, validate findings and communicate their results to their customers, both internal and external,” said Flow Science President Tom Jensen. “We spent a lot of time and effort looking for a solution that would give us the state-of-the-art post-processing and visualization our customers had been asking for. CEI and EnSight were a natural fit for us, offering both well-developed technology that could quickly plug in to FLOW-3D, as well as a similar open and collaborative corporate culture that will continue to benefit our customers down the road.”

FLOW-3D Users will be able to take a little sneak-peek of the new software at this summer’s European Users Conference.

CEI Launches New EnSight 10 for Improved CAE/CFD Visualization

Today CEI has announced the immediate availability of the new EnSight 10.  It’s a huge improvement, offering up a new customizable GUI with full drag-n-drop functionality and lots of new rendering features.  Perhaps the biggest new feature, long held up by ParaView and VisIt fans as a critical missing feature of EnSight, is their new Volume Rendering support.

“This is by far the most sophisticated version of EnSight yet,” said Robert J. Kares, Ph.D., Senior Technical Staff Member in the Applied Computational Physics Division at Los Alamos National Laboratory and a long-time user of the EnSight product line. “The ability to combine the new volume visualization feature with clips, isosurfaces and any of EnSight’s many other visualization tools has proven to be a tremendously powerful method for understanding the results from our petascale fluid flow simulations in 3D. This new capability has revealed an enormous wealth of important detail in our big 3D flow simulations that had long been hidden to us.”

While EnSight is just one entry in the ever-growing space of open-source datavis tools, they remain one of the most popular thanks to their rigorous testing and validation which are important   These new features just prove they’ll continue to remain in the market for many years to come.  Get the full release after the break.

EnSight 9.2 released

Computational Engineering International (CEI) has announced the release of EnSight 9.2, or more specifically, version 9.2.1a. EnSight 9.2 can be downloaded and installed alongside previous versions of EnSight, and uses the same license key as before. There are several improvements that are incorporated in this new version of EnSight, including:

  • OpenFOAM direct reader
  • HPC Launch Capabilities
  • More Click-n-go functionality
  • Touch-n-go
  • Much faster rendering of annotations when using large models
  • Improved Clip Planes thru Polyhedral Cells

The HPC Launch Capabilities look interesting to me. The idea behind this is that EnSight users should not have to set environment variables, configure SSH port forwarding, and mess around with their own particular flavor of batch queuing systems. Instead, users should be able to launch jobs that will run at their particular site without having to jump through so many hoops. However, their press release says that you will need to contact their support desk in order to schedule time to implement this for your particular setup.

Touch-n-go is a nice feature that is being added to EnSight. Simply move your mouse on top of objects and handles will appear. You can manipulate the handles to resize (for example) the colorbar. This does not require a redraw of the screen. Instead it is just an overlay redraw that is composited back into the image. This works with objects, but does not work with parts (like an isosurface, for example).

The next version of EnSight should be released in another month or so and should have the following improvements:

  • Support for EnSight DR
  • EnSight DR support for Context files
  • Easier Client-Server Launch

Even better will be EnSight 10.0, which is slated for release in the 2nd quarter of 2011. It will feature a new GUI built on top of PythonQt. That gives EnSight users something to look forward to for the new year. Since I am an EnSight user, I certainly am looking forward to trying out these new features.

Camaro Underbody Design & Visualization

Over at the VizWorthWatching blog (run by some CEI staff), they have an article on an analysis of the underbody of the 1997 Camaro SS.  After establishing a baseline with a classic wind tunnel, the simulated the effect with StarCCM+, and then exported the data for use in EnSight.

Some nice pictures, with a few details on the process, over at their site.

CEI Releases EnSight 9.1.2a

Fans of CEI’s EnSight have a lot to look forward to thanks to a new point release of the popular commercial visualization and analysis tool.  In addition to several bugfixes and minor optimizations, they’ve added several huge features worthy of a major revision:

  • A new ANSYS Results Reader
  • Support for ABAQUS 6.10
  • New functions for network license controls
  • Volume Rendering is now available in EnSight DR

And many many more, read the release notes for all the gory details.  The Volume Rendering addition is probably the biggest, and takes their newest feature to the extreme scalability of HPC platforms.

EnSight 9.1.1b now available

CEI announced on Friday that it has released 9.1.1b. This appears to be mainly a bug-fix for the EnSight Client, the EnSight Server, EnSight SoS, EnSight DR, and EnLiten. If you are an EnSight user, you can check the website below to see what the updates are.

Following on the successful launch of EnSight 9.1, which we blogged about here, There is a bug fix version, 9.1.1b, now available for download from our website.

The primary changes were in HPC functionality found in server-of-servers (S.O.S) and Distributed Rendering (DR).

EnSight CFD 2.0 has been released

Computational Engineering International (CEI) has announced that EnSight CFD 2.0 is now available with volume rendering. EnSight CFD is specifically designed for the CFD user, and sports a new graphical user interface when compared to EnSight Gold. They have also announced a version for Mac users using Apple’s Cocoa framework. Better yet, they have announced the following:

But perhaps the most interesting addition to EnSight CFD 2.0 is a free version. The free version has some limits in file size (number of elements), doesn’t read all the same data formats, and has a small watermark on the screen. But other than that, and lack of access to personal support, seems to be comparable to the paid version.

EnSight in Engineering: The Mac is coming back

At MacWorld 2010, attendance was down and Apple was nowhere to be found, but CEI was on the floor demonstrating a new version of EnSight that runs natively on Mac.  David Morgenstern with ZDNet writes up his thoughts in a new story:

Just to be clear, this is not a Windows version running in Boot Camp or Parallels, and not an X Application, but a true native Mac OS X application. The relative ease of producing a native Mac version of Caedium along with the existing Windows and Linux versions demonstrates the unique cross-platform architecture embedded within Caedium from its initial conception. Caedium will become one of the few (maybe only) commercial CFD analysis tools to run as a native application on the Mac.

I can attest to Mac’s making inroads in engineering, as they offer more reliability than Windows machines and the “power” of a Linux machine, without requiring you to know how to compile a kernel.
