Season 1 of HBO’s Boardwalk Empire is finished, and if you saw it then you probably enjoyed some of Brainstorm Digital’s fantastic VFX work. Ranging from bluescreens to scenery and backdrops, through to facial reconstruction and 3d modeling work, they’ve posted a great VFX breakdown video on vimeo. Check it out below.

aetuts has a great collection of VFX breakdowns covering films as new as Avatar and Alice and Wonderland, and going back through several reels we’ve covered in the past.
I say it time and time again, these are seriously some of my favorite roundups to do. Watching these amazing making ofs, behind the scenes content, and VFX breakdowns really give you a look into how a shot was made, or what really goes into a production. You can take a lot away from just seeing a couple of shot breakdowns… so check em out!

Just found this via some fellow Twitter-ites, it’s a video comparison of various stages of the REndering & Compositing of various Ice Age 3 scenes. Compiled by Jeff Gabor of Blue Sky Studios, it shows the animators acting the scenes, two different stages of modeling and pre-rendering, and the final rendered scenes.

IE Effects has updated their website with a breakdown video showing one of their scenes for the horror movie “Drag Me To Hell”. In it they show the original greenscreen footage, and the several levels of VFX they created (Removing greenscreens, adding backgrounds, removing cables, and adding foreground objects).

@alba tipped me off to a pair of videos on Vimeo from Sorin Voicu that show an augmented reality interface on the streets of Rome (I think). Called “Realta Aumentata”, it has some interesting ideas on how an augmented reality interface could work. The VFX breakdown is interesting as well to see how the VFX were implemented.
I’m unable to translate the captions & credits. Anyone care to post a translation?
