exPreview brings us news of the new Asus MARS II graphics card that packs in two of the new Fermi-driven GTX480 chips onto a single PCB, with all of the heat and electrical problems that come along with it.
This graphics accelerator employs two NVIDIA GeForce GTX 480 (GF100) GPUs on one board, that is to say, this the first dual-GPU accelerator based on GF100, which is dreaded for its thermal and electrical characteristics so much. In terms of power supply, three 8-pin power interface for its big power consumption.
Theoretically, the card is Quad-SLI capable if matched with another ASUS MARS II, but the details of how they keep it from melting into slag are still a secret.

Do you think that the Nvidia GeForce GTX 480 is the fastest graphics card? Well, not really. The ATI Radeon 5970 really the fastest graphics card out there right now. The 5970 is a pair of 5870 GPUs on one graphics card with 2 GB of GDDR5 memory. The only drawback is that the GPUs are down-clocked from 850 MHz to 725 MHz. O.K. Maybe it is not a fair comparison as it is two GPUs for the 5970 versus one for the 480.
PC Perspective has the scoop that Asus will be releasing a dual GPU version of the, well, you can read for yourself.
While the card we are showing here is a production sample, ASUS assures us that it will be available in about 2 months or so. The ASUS ARES as it is called is a dual-GPU Evergreen product with a pair of TRUE HD 5870 GPUs – not a combination of underclocked HD 5870 GPUs like the Radeon HD 5970 released back in November.

Anandtech has a review of the ASUS N61J-X2 Laptop. This 16″ laptop comes with a Intel Core i5 CPU, USB 3.0, and an NVIDIA GeForce GT325M with Optimus technology. If you do not remember what NVidia’s Optimus technology is, suffice it to say that it allows a user to switch between the integrated graphics chip (for long battery life) or the NVidia graphics chip (for powerful performance). For more information, please read our articles covering the topic.
Personally, I have an Asus UL series laptop. I like its low weight and long battery life. It does not have the Optimus technology, but it does allow me to switch between the Intel IGP and the NVidia 210 graphics chip without a reboot. The Asus N61J-X2 reviewed here seems more like a desktop replacement system.

ExPreview has information from Cebit about a new AMD Radeon build from ASUS that combines a pair of Radeon HD5870′s into what they are calling the ‘HD5970 Ares” card.
Just as we reported, the power supply of this card is realized by 8pin+8pin+6pin power connector which supports up to 450W.
Powered by two Radeon HD 5870 graphics engines running at 850MHz, the card features 3200 stream processors, and 4GB of GDDR5 memory running at 4800MHz.
A limited run (maybe only 1000 units worldwide), it’s expected to cost upwards of 1000 € . What does that get you? 3dMark Vantage Extreme gives it a X14416 score, pretty impressive but not enough to get into the Top 20.

Mere hours after news broke of NVidia possibly “fudging” the benchmark results of the recent mobile GPU benchmark, a rebuttal has appeared that places the blame not on NVidia, but on ASUS.
Who is at fault here? The answer is not simple, but understandable: ASUS. When we checked for latest drivers, it turned out that AMD’s own site will give you ATI Mobility Radeon X1800 as the latest mobile graphics card out there. No Mobility Radeons 2000, 3000 or 4000 series exist. According to amd.com, ATI stopped making graphics cards for notebooks in 2006. We asked questions to Ian McNaughton and Jay Marsden of AMD fame, but received no answer at press time. We reserve the right to update this article with their answer once it becomes available.
While NVidia could possibly be blamed for not advertising the lack of game profile or in not really pushing the ASUS system to it’s maximum limits, that’s not really their job. The real puzzler is how did ASUS create a “Gaming laptop” with chips that, supposedly, were not manufactured after 2006?

A recent press release and benchmark from NVidia won them the title of “world’s most powerful mobile GPU setup”. They pitted their Alienware M17X, which contains dual GTX280M’s in SLI, against the Asus W90, powered by dual AMD4870′s in Crossfire. The NVidia/Alienware system won easily. However, new information has come up that has people wondering if perhaps the race should have been a bit closer, or perhaps NVidia should have lost:
To prove their point nVidia tested both systems and when setting up the Asus they stated that they used the “latest drivers”. However it appears that this is far from the truth and the drivers are more than one year old, hardly utilizing the second 4870 at all. It is unclear if nVidia did this to provide a larger, more impressive lead than they already had in the benchmark or if they had to do this to come out on top.
A year in the age of Video drivers is ancient history, and NVidia should know better (#1 rule in every NVidia troubleshooting howto is “Check your driver version”).
Update: Be sure to read the followup to these allegations that places most of the blame on ASUS.

Pics are floating around of a new AMD Radeon HD4770 card from Asus that, I have to admit, looks pretty kewl.
If you want a pretty design as well as the cost-effective performance, just look at the Asus Formula series HD 4770. With model number of EAH4770FML, the card features 750MHz GPU clock while the memory operates at 800MHz with 128bit memory bus. According to HKEPC, it also sports DVI, D-Sub and HDMI outputs.
And that cool looking formula one spoiler does more than just look nice, it’s got a full heatsink integrated into it. See more pics after the break.
