Yale Architecture Students Dig Into Autodesk Mudbox

You might not think Mudbox is an architectural design tool, but if Mark Gage has his way it could be.  Check out his interested uses for the tool in this presentation at Autodesk University.

Hear Yale University Architecture professor Mark Gage describe how he is introducing his students to Autodesk Mudbox. Mark comments on the need for today’s architects to get exposure to what media and entertainment creation software can do for them. Recorded at Autodesk University 2010.

Architectural Movies in Minutes with Lumion

A new tool for creating high-quality visualizations and movies of architectural models comes from ‘Lumion’.  It imports models from tools like Autodesk and Sketchup and allows you to merge them with a massive content library of trees, people, and random objects, then render it all with realistic water, lighting, and sky effects.

“With Lumion we want to allow everyone to create awesome 3D visualizations, movies and presentations”, says Ferry Marcellis, CEO and founder of Act-3D. “Our goal behind creating this software is to offer the fastest workflow possible. We want to make people being able to apply advanced effects and technology without having to worry about all the background details. Moreover, waiting for ages to render images and movies now belongs to the past.”

I don’t see any details on the rendering engine, but the demonstration videos they show are impressive.    They have a limited demo available with a small portion of their library and a disabled save, but the full version is only 750 €.

The GH House Challenge 23 Finalists Render Showcase

Ronen Bekerman has just concluded his GH House Challenge and is showing the 23 amazing images in the final lot.

I’m very proud to present the images created by the 23 finalists of the first Architectural Visualization Challenge – The GH House. The public vote by the forums members is also open and you are all invited to take part in voting for your favorite! Don’t forget to submit your feedback if you participated in the challenge or even just visited the forums during this event.

Some great pictures, and an overwhelming amount of 3dsMax and Vray, much to my surprise.  Only 2 Cinema4D entries, only 2 Blender entries, and only a single Maya entry.

Ronen Bekerman’s Making of ‘MS House’ at Dusk

ronen-bekermanRonen Bekerman is publishing a great tutorial covering his creation of this spectacular image.  He begins with parsing the CAD drawings and creating a model in SketchUP, and then exporting the model into Autodesk’s 3dsMax.  In part 2, coming soon, he will covering rendering and post-production.

Photo realistic rendering in MachStudio Pro?

machstudiopro-photorealisticRecently there has been some discussion about the abilities of MachStudio Pro in photo-realistic renderings.  StudioGPU took it as a challenge, and have a new blog post discussing the possibilities.

I’ve read several comments in which, although artists were amazed by the performance and quality of MachStudio Pro, they were specifically searching for a solution to replace their offline photo-realistic rendering engines. A typical comment was something like: “Well V-Ray/Mental Ray/Brazil renders this architectural/automotive/product image like this. How close can MachStudio Pro get to this kind of photo-realistic render?”

In the image above, one image is from MachStudio Pro and the other is from V-Ray.  Can you tell the difference?  Read their post for the answer, and to see some great movies of architectural fly-throughs rendered with MachStudio Pro.

How To Render Outlines in 3DS Max

outlines03One common trick when working with Architectural Rendering is rendering Outlines.  Not wireframe, but outlines of the edges of objects.  This removes the bias of shadows and colors, and gives a great view of the structure.  Ramy Hanna has posted some tips on using the “Ink n Paint” shader in 3ds Max to get the desired results.

I just recently was trying to get some nice renderings with just the outlines of a model, and thought this would be a good topic to post. The nice thing about this method is it works regardless of if you are using scanline, mr, or vray. The magic shader for this trick is the “Ink ‘n Paint” shader.
