Edelkrone has created a new type of tripod just right for the solo videographer, such as creators with YouTube channels, videographers who create “how-to’s” or reviews, or anyone who wants an easy to set up, highly portable and storable tripod.

The 12lb stand uses multiple arms that extend vertically to a maximum height of 64″, though they recommend 28″ as the optimum height, just shy of a standard table top of 30″. They do not refer to it as a tripod, and it doesn’t appear to have many options for leveling a camera on an uneven floor, nor do the legs and small wheels make it apt for outdoor work or even heavy duty dollying.

However, for a “set it – forget it” tool, this looks optimum, as it folds down into a small space and could conceivably fit in a large backpack  or tucked away in a closet, and doesn’t use handles or screw knobs to position the height and angle of the camera.

As for the type of camera, this will hold up to a 6lb camera, which covers most DSLR and even the smaller ENG cameras out there serving the prosumer market. Without testing the unit, I wouldn’t suggest putting a large rig with rails, follow focus, lights, etc, on it, as it might shift the balance and destabilize the position of the camera.

Edelkrone does produce sturdy equipment very well crafted, and has been creating rig equipment for videographers looking to save space, work lightly and making their products as compact as possible. This fits perfectly in that category, and could be just the piece of equipment to make the DSLR single-person on camera crowd very happy with a relatively low-tech stand to replace a fussy tripod.

The unit is on sale now, retail price direct from the manufacturer is $699, and will be ready for shipping by August 15, 2016, according to the manufacturer.
