Will traditional engineering be the same in 10 years? 20 years? It would seem that it has been in rapid change as it has been affected by software, hardware and visual tools (CAD, CAM, 3D PRINTING) that are barely more than a generation or two in age. Will the protractor still be used in schools? What happened to the Slide Rule? (Does anyone under 30 know what a Slide Rule is?). Of course IoT is mentioned, but will we even use that term as the practice of having “aware” devices or clothing and objects that communicate data becomes ubiquitous?

Here’s a graphic created by Dessault Systems/Solidworks, and it’s particularly gratifying to see that design methodologies, particularly how visuals are handled, are clearly listed in red boxes defining each period, while examples of major design milestones are displayed in simple drawings above.

And while it’s clearly an advertising piece for Solidworks, the DID YOU KNOW? sections contain good general information, and they have sourced it all carefully (as listed at the end).

The link to the original source is captioned beneath the infographic, where the PDF and a 22-minute on-demand webinar is being offered as well about new approaches to engineering.
