The price of one meal in Oslo is equal to the cost of 9 meals in Kuala Lumpur, and one night in the Bahamas is the price of 7 nights in Goa.

While planning the next city break, most of us try to estimate how big of a hole in our pocket it will make. This time, you do not have to do the research yourself. Travel planner Tripomatic.com has ranked 50 of the world’s most popular destinations in this simple infographic according to how long you can stay there with a $100 budget.

Tripomatic conducted the same research last year and compared the prices. Some of the results were quite surprising.

World’s cheapest and most expensive cities

Last year’s cheapest and most expensive destinations were the same: Goa and Oslo. In Oslo, $100 will last you barely more than a single day, but in Goa, you can stay for over eight days for the same price. Over $50 will go to your food costs in Oslo, while food will cost you only $7 in Goa.

Nassau, Bahamas and London are similar to Oslo – your travel budget will be nearly spent in a day. If traveling cheap, consider visiting Hanoi or Manila instead, where you can spend a week for the same price. South-East Asia in general is a very good spot for all budget travelers, as most of the cheapest destinations are located there. Buenos Aires is another good bet, as its top 10 attractions are completely free.

According to the research, the best way to save money is to look for cheap accommodations. The prices of hotels and hostels have gone down all around the world. Private accommodation is also becoming cheaper. Renting a private room on Airbnb is cheaper than a shared hostel dorm in destinations such as Jerusalem, Tokyo, and Mexico City. In Denpasar, Bali, private accommodation on Airbnb was 74% cheaper than a shared hostel dorm last year!

Methodology

To be able to compare such a wide range of places, Tripomatic.com researched the prices of the most common needs of a budget traveler and took the average to find the daily travel costs.

The results are based on costs for one night in a shared dorm in a cheap, decent hostel near the city center or a suitable private room on Airbnb, three meals a day (two fast food meals and one in a cheaper restaurant), two trips using public transport in the city center and the average prices of the ten most popular tourist attractions on Tripomatic.com.
