CEWEEK in New York City had many of the usual big players in the visuals/video/photography arena, but they set aside room for a few new ventures that are in the relatively new field of 3D printing.

One gathering great attention was Matter and Form (www.matterform.net), which sparked massive interest (and funding) on Indiegogo with their portable 3D Scanner, aimed at the prosumer market, and is, according to CEO and Co-Founder Drew Cox, about to start shipping pre-ordered units in the next two weeks.

Here’s a short interview about the 3D scanner, along with a possible preview of what’s to come next from them:

Supporting all of the standard 3D formats (applicable for use by animators and CAD designers as well), the unit can handle objects up to about a 6.5″ diameter and 8″ tall on the turntable. Scanning time takes anywhere from 5 to 45 minutes. The scanner comes completely packaged with the scanner and software to output the files as well.

The current price for the unit is $575.00 USD, and they are taking orders on their website now, planning on shipping before Christmas 2014.

What would you like to see them produce? A larger scanner bed? Higher resolution?  Or a hand-held unit? It seems that they could take any number of routes in their next-gen device.
