MONKEYmedia® , a company with a 20 year history of independent R&D innovation, has released an interactive experience app, Whole Point Space™, for the iPad®.
This interactive dance experience derives from three solo adaptations of the same dance score, No Time To Fly, written and choreographed by American dance pioneer Deborah Hay and performed by Jeanine Durning, Juliette Mapp, and Ros Warby. In conjunction with The Forsythe Company’s Motion Bank research project, the three solos were recorded 21 times over 2 years in Frankfurt, Germany.
Video artist Rachel Strickland and inventor Eric Gould Bear reframed the piece with Hay as a 13 minute 33 second polylinear trio for human-scale installation. The real-world exhibit, entitled Perception Unfolds: Looking at Deborah Hay’s Dance, will be on view from February 23 to May 18, 2014 at the Blanton Museum of Art at The University of Texas at Austin.
Whole Point Space, the portable embodiment of Hay’s exhibit, plays in MONKEYmedia’s Walk-in Theater™ for iOS. Developed by Strickland, Bear and sound designer Jim McKee, Walk-In Theater experiments with peripatetic perspective, engaging participants’ proprioceptors and spatial memory to orient themselves as they navigate among multiple video streams in a 3D sound field.
“The app and exhibit literally drop the audience into the middle of a Deborah Hay dance performance,” explains Bear. “The spatialized audiovisuals and motion-based user interface establish each visitor as a choreographer of unique juxtapositions. This deconstructing of bounds between active performer and passive observer is a phenomenal way to experience Hay’s work.”
