P-Mega-HIP_HOP_MONIKERSYes, this is too big to take in on your tablet or even your desktop monitor, and probably even your 55″ Ultra High Def screen would be hard pressed to display this map over over 1000 Hip-Hop names, published as a 60″ x 40″ wall map by Pop Chart Lab.

You could say “Oh no you di’n’t!”, but they really did it, producing, in their words, a “colorfully categorized and sorted by semantics, this notoriously B.I.G. (forgive us) print breaks down your MCs, your DJs, your Mastas, your Killas, your Masta Killas, and Markies both Biz- and –Mark. Note: Carefully checked, double-checked, and triple-checked to ensure we did not forget about Dre.”

Categories for grouping include titles such as “Criminals”, “Dictators”, “Physical or Metaphysical Characteristics”, “Animal, Mineral or Vegetable”, “Titles, Professions & Honorifics”, “Wordplay”, and subcategories including “Three Letters” (see the reference to Dre above” and “Three Letters and a period”—so it goes in the world of hip-hop, and the lines of colors making the connections from subject to sub-section to individual name are clear enough to be able to trace the connections even when they stretch nearly across the entire page. I believe that Tufte would be proud to hang this on his wall.

Pop Chart Lab is offering the chart as a print for $90, using 100lb archival recycled stock, signed by the artist and produced on a start of the art digital offset press.

The print has been up for pre-order, and they will start shipping tomorrow, November 14, 2013.

This link will take you to the page where you can zoom in and read the chart in detail, but it’s much more impressive in print, I’m sure.
