Mankind has been driven towards war since…well, ever, I guess. Conflict History was released recently as an interactive map with all the major military conflicts, showing that, despite the advances our civilization made in the last couple of centuries, war is far from being something of the past. Al Qaeda’s worldwide attacks, showed here by The Economist, made the invasion of Iraq and Afghanistan “justifiable”, but , as we can see on CNN‘s and The New York Times visualizations, the cost of that “response” has been high – too high.
Last week we dedicated the Daily Viz from Visual Loop to the events of 09/11 – remembered here once again by Ria Novosti and National Journal. Following that, this week we’ll dive into the U.S. response: the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and the hunt for Bin Laden and the other Al Qaeda members. Today, some general overviews by The New York Times, National Priorities and designer Gareth Parry, just to put things in perspective.
Autodesk rolled out a clever technology preview a while back called “Project Krypton” which brought early-stage design advice to plastic part designers, and integrated into Inventor, SolidWorks, and Pro/E. It added lots of interesting features like manufacturability, cost efficiency, and environmental impact, but the preview ended March 25th.
Well now it’s back on Autodesk’s Beta program as “Autodesk Moldflow Project Argon”. Check out the video above.
Some PR is coming out about the annual Scientific Visualization Showcase at this year’s SC11 in Seattle, with a few quotes from TACC’s Kelly Gaither and others.
“We want to show the SC audience how beautiful science can be and also highlight the important role that visualization plays in understanding scientific data,” said Kelly Gaither, director of visualization at the Texas Advanced Computing Center and chair of the SC11 Visualization Showcase.
To close this week of 09/11 related infographics we’ll take a look at how the criminal justice deals with terrorist, from Criminal Justice Degree and The Economist, followed by Ria Novosti‘s map of countries with greatest risk of terrorism. From the Navanti Group comes the Periodic Table of Terrorist Organizations, and we finish the week with some numbers about the War on Terror – the topic for next week’s Daily Viz from Visual Loop – , brought by Owni.
After the 09/11 attacks – illustrated here by Ria Novosti, besides the ones we brought in the previous posts of this week’s Daily Viz from Visual Loop -, some conspiracy theories started to pop-up, and Truther.org showed some of the controversial allegations behind those theories. But the truth is, as far as terrorist attacks go, this is not an exclusive problem of the United States. Ria Novosti , the Navanti Group and GOOD made some infographics showing the several attacks all over the world, including timelines and maps.
Just got a link to “Lumion”, a real-time 3D visualization tool aimed at architects that boasts a wide assortment of file formats, prebuilt models, and plugins.
Lumion® is a real-time 3D visualization tool for architects, urban planners and designers. It’s perfectly suited for creating videos, still renderings and live demonstrations with a quick turnaround.
Lumion offers excellent graphics in combination with a fast and efficient workflow, saving you time, effort and money. It is in fact so easy to create awesome still renderings and videos with Lumion® that it almost feels like cheating.
Their free version is surprisingly feature complete, just dropping a few of the prebuilt models and no animation support, but definitely worth checking out. Requires Windows and a “modern” video card, and retails for 799 € or 1499 €.
