Grid Visualization Efforts Helped Heal After Hurricane

Power outages are a standard part of natural disasters, be it earthquakes, hurricanes, or just accidental outages.  New technology called “VERDE”, which stands for Visualizing Energy Resources Dynamically on Earth, merges information from dozens of electrical utility companies into a Google Earth mashup.  The result is a realtime dashboard of the US power grid status.

The visualization program was built after the major Northeast blackout in August 2003, when emergency operations centers got their information secondhand from a panel of eight television screens—one for each major network. “Nobody even knew what was going on the next utility over,” says Budhendra Bhaduri, leader of the Geographic Information Science and Technology group at Oak Ridge, which develops data-mining-based information systems.

Autodesk Design Visualization Show Reel 2011 Call for Submissions

Autodesk is now accepting entries into their 2011 Design Visualization Show Reel.  Pretty much anything along Autodesk’s design lines is eligible, and the winners get a pretty substantial bit of visibility in everything Autodesk.

The show reel will be featured in all Autodesk University sessions from November 29 through December 1, 2011, and to the opening of the Autodesk University main stage presentation on the Autodesk Web site, AREA, and YouTube Channel, as well as various events throughout 2012.

Intel, Dell Powering Stampede Supercomputer in Texas

TACC is bringing a new Supercomputing online called “Stampede” which aims to push the limits of Linux Cluster designs and further the NSF’s “Extreme Digital” program.  Providing a peak 2 Petaflops of performance, with another 8 petaflops of possible performance thanks to Intel’s Knights Ferry chips, you may be wondering what they plan to use for visualization and analysis.

In addition, Stampede will offer 128 next-generation Nvidia graphics processing units (GPUs) for remote visualization, 16 Dell servers with 1 terabyte of shared memory and 2 GPUs each for large data analysis, and a high-performance Lustre file system for data-intensive computing.

Many people in the field (myself included) believe that the days of dedicated graphics processing systems are numbered, but Stampede seems to indicate they have some life left in them.  However, I have to wonder what percentage of the $50M cost of the system is locked up in these 16 1-terabyte nodes.

5 misconceptions about visualization

Nathan Yau over at FlowingData has a great writeup on visualization, based on his experience as a week-long “Visiting Scholar” at the US Census Bureau.  They’re trying hard to boost their visualization (where else would they have so much data to play with?!), so he had the opportunity to sit with lots of people, both experts and novices.

This is probably the most common one. It’s easy to look at a lot of the best visualization projects and want your data to look and feel the same way. So people ask, “I have such and such data. Is there a visualization technique that I can use to make it look cooler?”

Well, maybe. Not if you only have five data points though. You can spend a lot of time with icons or fancy print, but the graphics are interesting because the data that the visuals represent is interesting.

Finishing the infographic round-up about the War on or, we bring today a Tableau visualization about Al  Qaeda’s attacks, and a Most Wanted FBI list updated after Bin Laden’s death, made by Ria Novosti. Then, law firm Mark Whitehead & Associates looks at the issue of denied disability benefits for Veterans, and a couple of infographics about the Memorial Day – it was celebrated some time ago, but we feel to be quite suitable for this week’s topic -, from Ultimate Cupons and In The Light Urns.

Recent Project Photofly YouTube videos from users

Autodesk’s Project Photofly is still going strong, and to prove it they’ve posted on their own blog a nice assortment of videos showing what users have done with it.

One of the convenience features of the Photo Scene Editor, a small application that you use to work with the Project Photofly web service, is that it will create and publish a video to YouTube for you. It uses the camera location of each of your submitted pictures as a key frame and combines them to make an animation. Several users have leveraged this capability to share what they have been able to create using Project Photofly.

Some impressive stuff there, and I can’t wait to see how Autodesk works this into their professional products.

“Point Clouds in the Cloud:” Getting Lidar Out of Organizational Silos

LiDAR data is always tricky to work with, requiring knowledge of arcane tools and all the various tricks of the sensors.  Frequently left in the hands of experts, this frequently means the data is only made available for a mere fraction of it’s possible uses.  Some new tools from Dielmo aims to change this with the power of the Cloud and modern web browsing.

Dielmo’s 3D LiDAR Points Client is open source software that allows the visualization of LiDAR point cloud data in 3D over the internet. Any user, expert or not in LiDAR data, will be able to display a point cloud in 3D online, choose a visualization mode (Height, Intensity, Classification, RGB) and to change the size of the points, all without having expert software for managing LiDAR data. It can easily be integrated in any web browser or GIS software.

Daily Viz from Visual Loop – 22/09/2011

Without question, the death of Osama Bin Laden was one of the most significant moments in the War against Terror, initiated after the 09/11 attacks. And there was a lot of speculation in the media, surrounding the events that lead to his killing – including in infographics.
