For “Green Lantern”, yU+co created some impressing motion graphics for the lead-in and credit crawl showcasing some great CG work and RED Camera footage.
yU+co. was invited by Director Martin Campbell and Producer Donald DeLine to create a :90 second opening in 2D and stereoscopic 3D for Warner Bros.’ comic superhero story, Green Lantern. Using stylized patterns of light and color, the opening sequence takes the viewer on an immersive ride through the far reaches of outer space, showing the formation of the intergalactic peacekeeping corps of Green Lanterns and the evil force of fear that the superhero must destroy in order to maintain a balance of power in the universe..
The International Science & Engineering Visualization Challenge is coming up, and to open the submission process they’ve released a great video highlighting the winners since 2006.
Creating visualizations of scientific data is a particularly challenging task. It requires artistry, advanced computing skills, the ability to grasp the scientific concepts, and the creativity to conceive of new ways to display data. The successful visualization must be pleasing to both the eye and intellect, providing researchers with practical, even insightful perspective on their data.
Despite its growth, there’s still a lot of people – and companies – who consider Twitter to be a waste of time. But is it? ProBlogger tries to answer that, while Tech 18 brings a look at the importance of using Twitter for brand engagement. Inbox Q dives into the use of the service for obtaining answers, Alterian breaksdown the use of the Social “Ask” – like the phrase “Follow me on Twitter” -, and we finish today’s selection with Mashable‘s history of advertising on Twitter.
The internet is abuzz today about “Visual.ly”, a website that is hoping to offer semi-automatic infographic creation to the masses. Their webservers are a bit overloaded at the moment, but they hope to combine data from social media, open government, and other sources with graphical designs from designers like JESS3 and David McCandless into simple point-and-click tools.
Once their web servers can handle the load, the new and the already much hyped website allows access to over 2,000 different infographic illustrations, uploaded by designers like JESS3 and David McCandless, and including a large collection of own infographics. Visual.ly has already attracted key partners in publishing, design and distribution, including The Atlantic, CNNMoney.com, eBay, GOOD Magazine, OMD, National Geographic, The Next Web, and Smirnoff. Each of these publications is allowed to upload its own graphics, which can then be embedded and shared via a Visual.ly-created embed code.
If you want to try it out (and don’t mind dealing with server load), you can try out their “Twitter Visualizer”. My results are after the break.
What kind of Planetarium can you build for $14M US Dollars? Apparently, the Adler Planetarium in Chicago. Boasting 42 NVidia Quadro GPU’s and 20 high-resolution projectors, they project a massive 64-megapixel 190-degree display onto the 71-foot dome.
“Our goal was to create an experience that was the closest you could get to outer space travel,” said Paul H. Knappenberger Jr., the Adler’s president. “We want visitors to feel like they are really traveling through the universe to see galaxies collide and witness stars and planets being born.”
So what do you sho won this? Right now they’re showing some high-resolution space simulation results from NASA Ames Research Center that generated 400 Terabytes of data.
MPC has really grown quickly over the last few years into a multinational VFX powerhouse. Such rapid growth and entry into such massive projects as 10,000BC, AvP, and Narnia have required some in-depth investment into technology to help them manage their data and pipelines. An article over at CGSociety gets indepth into some of the proprietary technolgy they’ve put together to make it all work.
It’s all about scalability. MPC is expanding quite a bit this year, and Hannes is making sure the infrastructure can handle that growth. On the CG side, “we have just developed a more advanced destruction toolkit called KALI that focuses on the material properties. For example, breaking a wooden table that would look different than ripping apart metal. We are also working on better handling of volumetric data in regards to simulations and in rendering.” Additionally MPC appointed Rob Pieke to focus on VFX research and innovation, keeping MPC’s software development efforts aligned with the latest in academic and industry breakthroughs. “It’s quite exciting, some of the stuff he plays with.”
Following our two-day infographic selection dedicated to Facebook, it’s time to look at another big name of the Social Media landscape: Twitter.
