MPC has really grown quickly over the last few years into a multinational VFX powerhouse.  Such rapid growth and entry into such massive projects as 10,000BC, AvP, and Narnia have required some in-depth investment into technology to help them manage their data and pipelines.  An article over at CGSociety gets indepth into some of the proprietary technolgy they’ve put together to make it all work.

It’s all about scalability. MPC is expanding quite a bit this year, and Hannes is making sure the infrastructure can handle that growth. On the CG side, “we have just developed a more advanced destruction toolkit called KALI that focuses on the material properties. For example, breaking a wooden table that would look different than ripping apart metal. We are also working on better handling of volumetric data in regards to simulations and in rendering.” Additionally MPC appointed Rob Pieke to focus on VFX research and innovation, keeping MPC’s software development efforts aligned with the latest in academic and industry breakthroughs. “It’s quite exciting, some of the stuff he plays with.”
