Future Pixar Short “La Luna” Revealed

Looks like we get a little sneak peak of Pixar’s newest short “La Luna”, to be premiered at the upcoming Annecy International Animation Festival this June.

“La Luna is the timeless fable of a young boy who is coming of age in the most peculiar of circumstances. Tonight is the very first time his Papa and Grandpa are taking him to work. In an old wooden boat they row far out to sea, and with no land in sight, they stop and wait,” reads the synopsis.

“A big surprise awaits the little boy as he discovers his family’s most unusual line of work. Should he follow the example of his Papa, or his Grandpa? Will he be able to find his own way in the midst of their conflicting opinions and timeworn traditions?”

Nvidia Losing Discrete Market Share?

Yesterday JPR came out with some results of NVidia’s Discrete Market share, making note of their loss to AMD and Intel’s Sandy Bridge.  Several sites quickly jumped on to proclaim the death of NVidia, but some new data from Mercury Research shows this is just the usual ebb and flow of the market.

This loss of share partly reflects NV’s decision to exit the integrated chipset market, but it’s also an ominous sign of things to come. Sandy Bridge and Llano, once fully launched, will threaten NV’s price points at the low end of the market. Intel’s Ivy Bridge could mount a fresh challenge against NV’s low-end bastions by the end of the year, while AMD’s Llano is rumored to be significantly faster than Sandy Bridge’s GPU.

Walt Disney releases 2 new Open Source Tools

The Walt Disney Animation Studios has just added two new software tools to their open-source offerings.  The first is a new tool called ‘Reposado’ that will probably appeal more to your Systems Admins than your graphics guys:

Reposado is a set of tools written in Python that replicate the key functionality of Mac OS X Server’s Software Update Service. Reposado, together with the “curl” binary tool and a web server such as Apache 2, enables you to host a local Apple Software Update Server on any hardware and OS of your choice. Reposado is licensed under the new BSD license.

Second is a new tool called ‘SeExpr’:

SeExpr is a simple expression language that we use to provide artistic control and customization to our core software. We use it for procedural geometry synthesis, image synthesis, simulation control, and much more.

It looks very much in the “Made for Engineers by Engineers” stages, but could be a great tool to use with massive geometry  & object instancing systems.

HR3D Dual-Layer Glasses-Free Display

MIT has come up with a new way to view 3-D images without the use of glasses. They are calling this High-Rank 3D Display. They say it is not another parallax barrier. Instead they call it Content Adaptive Parallax Barrier. What it sounds like to me is that instead of a parallax barrier that is fixed, this one can adjust based on the content being shown.
