At next week’s FMX show, NVidia is sponsoring a wide variety of presentations focused on lighting and rendering, including lots of the guys behind the recent film ‘Rio’.  In addition, they’ll be talking about use of NVidia products with things like Maxwell Render and V-Ray.

NVIDIA Puts the Spotlight on Lighting, Rendering and the Future of Filmmaking at FMX 2011

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — April 27, 2011— At next week’s FMX show, Europe’s leading annual conference on animation, visual effects, games and interactive media, NVIDIA is sponsoring a compelling variety of Tech-Talks, presentations and panel discussions focused on lighting and rendering. FMX 2011 takes place May 3-6 in Stuttgart, Germany.  On Tuesday, May 3, Neil Trevett, vice president of Mobile Content, NVIDIA, and President of the Khronos Group, delivers the opening day keynote, “Movie Making & More, All in the Palm of Your Hand.”

NVIDIA will then present a full day of Tech-Talks in Konig Karl Halle on lighting & rendering by artists and technologists from some of the world’s most accomplished studios and companies. The agenda includes:

11:00 a.m.-12:00 noon —Thomas Driemeyer, Emmanuel Turquin, and Francois Belot of The Bakery, presenting new interactive lighting, shading and rendering technology in Bakery Relight.

12:00 noon-1:00 p.m. — Marcos Fajardo of Arnold, and Dr. Larry Gritz, principal software engineer at Sony Pictures Imageworks (SPI), will present “Path Tracing and Unbiased Rendering for Animation Production.”

2:00-3:00 p.m. — Andrew Beddini, lighting supervisor, Blue Sky Studios, will present his approaches to Building, Lighting & Rendering on the smash animation hit, “Rio.”

3:00-4:00 p.m. — Mohit Kallianpur, look and lighting director, Walt Disney Animation, will present “Untangling ‘Tangled’: the Challenges and Inspirations of Creating a World Around 70 Feet of Hair.”

4:00-5:00 p.m. — Ben Snow, VFX supervisor, Industrial Light & Magic (ILM), and Christophe Héry, global tech and research TD, Pixar Animation Studios (and ILM alumnus) will present an “Introduction of Physically-Based Shading and Filtered MIS at ILM.”

5:00-7:00 p.m. — “GPU-based Lighting and Rendering Panel.” Representatives from the day’s sessions will join what promises to be a lively panel discussion on the techniques, challenges and successes they’ve invented and experienced in leveraging the graphics processing unit (GPU) for lighting and rendering in major feature films. Co-moderated by David Cohen, associate features editor, Variety, and Haarm-Pieter Duiker of  mental images, a wholly-owned subsidiary of NVIDIA, this one-and-a-half hour discussion will be fostered by attendee questions gathered from each panelist’s talk. Panel attendees will also be eligible to win a Motorola XOOM powered by the NVIDIA Tegra™ 2 dual core processor.

Additional Tech-Talks will take place on Wednesday, May 4 at FMX in Raum Karlsruhe, with NVIDIA presenting a number of sessions led by technology developers demonstrating the latest advances for lighting and rendering, including:

10:00-11:00 a.m. — Thomas Driemeyer of The Bakery, who will present new interactive lighting/rendering technology in Bakery Relight.

11:00 a.m.-12:00 noon — Konstantin Gaytandzhiev of Chaos Group will present a seminar on “Interactive Rendering Workflow with V-Ray.”

12:00 noon-1:00 p.m. — Dario Lanza of Next Limit Technologies will present “Photorealistic Rendering with Maxwell Render.”

2:00-3:00 p.m. — Brian Smits, graphics R&D, Pixar Animation Studios, will present “The Evolution of Illumination Models in RenderMan.”

3:00-4:00 p.m. — Andy Lomas of The Foundry will present “Katana: A Recipe-based Approach to Look Development and Lighting.”

4:00-6:00 p.m. — “GPU-based Lighting and Rendering Panel.”   Similar to Tuesday’s panel discussion, the day’s presenters will join another lively panel discussion where they will share the challenges and insights gained through developing GPU-based lighting and rendering technologies. Moderated by Wil Braithwaite, application engineer, NVIDIA, the discussion will be supplemented with attendee questions gathered from each panelist’s presentation. Attendees of this panel will be eligible to win an NVIDIA Quadro® 4000 (Mac or PC) professional graphics card.
