Fans of Dassault Systemes’ 3DVIA tool have a new feature to experiment with, Stereoscopic 3D.
“Including this feature in the free 3DVIA Studio offer is another example of our commitment to empower anyone to build lifelike 3D games and applications,” said Lynne Wilson, CEO, 3DVIA, Dassault Systèmes. “The stereoscopic 3D feature opens doors not only for developers, but the average consumer. With its drag and drop functionality, users can easily extend their creativity beyond online applications to video media for TVs, projectors, etc. It’s very timely given the rising popularity of 3D movies, as well as the consumer commoditization of 3D TVs.”
They have full documentation and a video tutorial on their site for the feature, so that in under 2 minutes you can convert your work to stereoscopic 3d. However, I’m a bit confused by one piece of their press release:

Red-Blue Anaglyph, yeah ok. Side-by-side, not my favorite but ok. “Checkboard” mode? I’ve never heard of such. What is “checkerboard” mode in 3D? After a bit of digging, it seems as though it’s an old standard that’s really only supported by some older Panasonic gear.

To help users navigate the newly added stereoscopic feature, 3DVIA has published documentation, including a short video tutorial explaining how to use it. In under two minutes, the video shows how anyone can give his or her projects extra dimension by adding stereoscopic 3D.

Not just rear projection. DLP projectors can also use this format. Existing digital cinemas only need special 3D hardware so they don’t have to pass out expensive active glasses.
Checkerboard DLP TVs from Samsung and Mitsubishi were the first 3DTVs to hit the market a few years ago. These were rear-projection units that were quickly replaced by the flat panel 3DTVs you see in stores now. Although you lose half the resolution with the checkerboard interleaving, the DLP TVs don’t suffer from the ghosting which is common with the newer sets.
Checkerboard (or quincunx) is the interleaving of the two images by odd/even pixels. It’s very common for older active displays running DLP, because DLP, using wobulation, generates this pattern automatically. Unlike top/bottom or left/right, you split the resolution loss more equitably in two axis.
