Anaglyphic 3D Dust Pillars in the Carina Nebula

NASA has just released some beautiful anaglyphic stereo images taken from the Hubble Telescope, showing some incredible images of the Carina Nebula.

This scientific visualization creates a three-dimensional virtual tour of several dark pillars of cool gas in the Carina Nebula. The stars and nebula layers from Hubble’s two-dimensional image have been separated using both scientific knowledge and artistic license to create the depth in the movie. Of note, the relative distances between stars and the nebula have been greatly compressed. The result is an intriguing journey through a virtual cosmic landscape.

Blu-ray 3D Disc Playback Support Coming to PlayStation 3 Next Week

Sony recently announced at the Tokyo Game Show, and on its PlayStation Blog, that 3-D Blu-Ray support will be coming next week with its latest software update, which is version 3.5. This update is due to be released on September 21.

This new feature expands the PS3’s 3D capabilities – as you may recall, we added the ability to play stereoscopic 3D games with the 3.30 firmware update in April.

While support for Blu-ray 3D discs is the primary new feature within the 3.50 update, there will be a few additional features. We’ll post more details on the blog prior to the firmware’s release, so check back here on Monday.

New AMD GPUs on the Horizon

ChipHell recently posted a leaked slide from AMD. On this slide were details of two of AMD’s upcoming GPUs. These GPUs are being called Barts PRO and Barts XT GPUs. They are aimed at NVIDIA’s GeForce GTX 460 series of GPUs, which is currently running at about $170 in price. Guru3D picks up the story with some more details:

The slide claims Barts is based on the Cypress dual engine architecture and features full Cypress AA and pixel render performance. The Barts XT will feature 12 SIMDs, 48 texture units, 960 shaders, 32 ROPs, and 256-bit memory bus. The chip has a 850MHz core, 1GB GDDR5 clocked at 4200MHz and a TDP of over 150W. The Barts PRO is a cut-down version with 10 SIMDs, 40 texture units, 800 shaders, 32 ROPs and 256-bit memory bus. Core frequency is expected to be 700 to 725MHz, with 1GB GDDR5 clocked at 4000MHz and a TDP of under 150W.

Ice Age 3: Dawn of the Dinosaur in 3-D

Ice Age 3: Dawn of the Dinosaur will be released on September 21st in 3-D. Right now you can buy it from Amazon.com for $21.99. You do not need a special 3-D HDTV or 3-D BluRay player to see the movie in 3-D. Instead, the package includes four pairs of the magenta and green cardboard glasses.

The question is, how many people will buy a product like this? It is nice that it does not require any new hardware, but it is not the best way to view 3-D. Of course, if you have a family of more than four people, I guess you are out-of-luck since it only comes with four glasses.
