I just got news from StarTech about a new gadget they’re calling the “SP123DP2DVI” adapter (Sexy name, isn’t it?) that can take a single DisplayPort input and split it across 2 or 3 monitors.  The result is that you can drive 3 monitors at 1280×1024 (for a total 3840×1024 resolution) from your laptop on a single DisplayPort interface.

The graphics expansion module can be used to span the DisplayPort image output across three monitors or clone the primary output image onto the displays – a convenient solution for a broad range of applications including creating ultra-widescreen environments for digital signage video walls, viewing/editing panoramic videos/graphics, playing simulation-based games and more.

The gadget retails for $299, available at places like TigerDirect and Amazon.  Looks like a great tool to use for laptop owners used to things like docking stations & port replicators to give the glory of multiple screen goodness to those typically stuck with a single external display.
