If you’ve watched any kids television lately, you may have seen the new Trix cereal ad that combines cell animation, stop motion, and 3D into an eye-catching spot for the popular children’s cereal. The spot was created by Calabash Animation, who wanted to create an imaginary world of abstract and whimsy, but complicated the usual process.
”The mixed media approach combined with a tight schedule meant that there wasn’t a lot of rough video to show the clients,” says Brejcha. ”The process was more formulative and experimental then our usual workflow, which usually includes frequent animation tests so they could see how things were progressing. They trusted us to make it look great.”
A commercial for The Golf Warehouse brought live video shot with a RED Camera together with design elements created in Cinema4D in the hands of Intake Studio, to create this visually compelling ad..
The most challenging component of the job was taking composited elements and giving them level of realism,” noted Balderston. “Working in Red’s high-resolution format enabled us accomplish that with its unique ability to maximize flexibility in the post production arena. The format allowed us to manipulate the visual effects more effectively and achieve the level of keying and detail needed to transition the look of the spot from visual effect-driven image to a more realistic style.”

NBC’s newest game show ‘Minute To Win It’ pits contestants in a high-speed high-stakes game with a chance at $1,000,000 in front of a large live audience. Or does it? A new press release from Dataton reveals that the audience is actually a ‘virtual audience’ powered by the Dataton WATCHOUT system across a 12-meter LED screen.
Dataton WATCHOUT multi-screen software is designed for high-impact presentations on a variety of display devices and is ideal for the broadcast environment. For the set of Minute to Win It, a forced perspective look creates a virtual audience in the background using a combination of video display and living elements. This is achieved using 12-channels of Dataton WATCHOUT to display content on a 12-meter LED screen positioned behind the audience wall on the main studio stage.
This screen is used to show a virtual audience in between game play, adding to the excitement and suspense of the game. The audience and other content is triggered via DMX from the lighting console and is able to sync with the lighting changes through the game, promising a seamless image on camera. All shows are pre-recorded for future broadcast.
The effect is seamless, and I have to admit I would have thought it real from the shots above.

The SC09 folks have posted the video of the community visualizations contributed to the conference online, and it shows several examples of some great visualization and research. Quick run through of the hour long video shows several virtual worlds running in Second Life and ScienceSim, some interesting scientific visualizations, some collaborative and experimental hardware systems, and lots of cutting edge science.

This has been all around the internet, but I thought I’ld share it today since I just found out VizWorld.com occupies a tiny little 48×48 portion of it. Over at nmap.org, they compiled the top 1-million websites (as ranked by Alexa) and compiled their Favicons into a giant map.
The area of each icon is proportional to the sum of the reach of all sites using that icon. When both a bare domain name and its “www.” counterpart used the same icon, only one of them was counted. The smallest icons–those corresponding to sites with approximately 0.0001% reach–are scaled to 16×16 pixels. The largest icon (Google) is 11,936 x 11,936 pixels, and the whole diagram is 37,440 x 37,440 (1.4 gigapixels). Since your web browser would choke on that, we have created the interactive viewer below (click and drag to pan, double-click to zoom, or type in a site name to go right to it).

If you use your NVidia 3D Vision setup to watch movies, then go get the latest version they just published. It adds support for several new formats and abilities:
Added support for MXF files of Digital Cinema Packages.
Added JPEG2000 video decoder.
Added timing correction for field-sequential content. The new timing option compensates the sync offset of 1/50 or 1/60 second between the left and right field by doubling the frame rate and delaying one eye by one frame.
Added m2ts file extension in open dialog.
Added support for 3D Vision Surround mode
Added frame-sequential input layout.
They’ve also updated their Quicktime sources, and fixed several glitches related to fullscreen, playlists, and other issues.
