Polaroid Partners with RealD for New 3D Glasses Line
What you see above is a new design for the classic RealD 3D Glasses used in theaters around the world, created by Polaroid to fix several of the problems with the current design.
Polaroid claims the curved surfaces provide a superior viewing area for large, theater-caliber screens, and ample room for prescription lenses underneath. Polaroid points out that the lenses offer UV protection as well, should you wish to jaunt around outside wearing them.
Not to mention they actually look pretty cool.
Daily Viz from Visual Loop – 19/08/2010
We’ve selected today some brand new infographics about the Internet and Social Media. Let’s start with MBA Online‘s History of the Internet, from concept to “modern” days. Things have grown a bit since 1962, and nothing expresses it best than Facebook. But what if Solar Power grew as fast as Mark Zuckerberg’s company? 1BOG‘s infographic helps with that question. Then, we take a look at Friendfeed (by Kawakumi) and Digg (from Online Schools), two of the most popular internet services ever, and we close up with Credit Score tips on how to prevent identity theft.

Hollywood Visual Effects with 3ds Max Master Joe Gunn
Over at Autodesk’s AREA, they’ve invoted VFX Guru Joe Gunn to talk about 3dsMax and offer up a tutorial on using PFlow to create a nice cracking window effect.
I have invited 3ds Max Master Joe Gunn to share some 3ds max tips and tricks based on his experience using 3ds max on Hollywood movies such as 2012. Joe was very generous to accept the offer and he has recorded a very cool particle effects trick for the blog. Having guests on my blog is something i have never done before but i think it brings a lot of value to what i am trying to do here which is to share techniques, tips and tricks around 3ds max.

Allan McKay Industrial Light + Magic – Fume FX Talk
Allan McKay Industrial Light + Magic – Fume FX Talk from Allan McKay on Vimeo.
Allan McKay has just posted a good 40-minute talk on Vimeo of a recent demonstration of FumeFX at the ILM facilities.
This was based on a talk I performed at ILM earlier this year demonstrating basic concepts of Fume FX and its capabilities. The talk was pretty much thrown together the night before and demonstrated on my laptop, however it should have some useful bits of information throughout it.

At the upcoming IFA2010 event in Berlin, looks like LG will be the company to watch as they roll out a 31-inch OLED Television prototype.
The IFA-2010 event starts on 03.09. and ends at 08.09.2010 in Berlin. LG Electronics (LG-Display) plans to show a new 31 inch OLED-Television prototype at this event. Our source seoul.co.kr report about the exhibition and the new products which LG-Electronics plans to show. LG Electronics show a new 31 inch OLED-Tv, 72 inch 3D-LED-Tv, and the world thinnest LCD-TV with 7 mm.
No numbers on price, but I suspect it will be far beyond the reach of mere mortals.

Resource Of The Week: OpenGL SuperBible
This week’s recommended resource is the latest (5th) edition of the OpenGL Superbible from Richard Wright and Addison-Wesley publishing.
OpenGL® SuperBible, Fifth Edition is the definitive programmer’s guide, tutorial, and reference for the world’s leading 3D API for real-time computer graphics, OpenGL 3.3. The best all-around introduction to OpenGL for developers at all levels of experience, it clearly explains both the API and essential associated programming concepts. Readers will find up-to-date, hands-on guidance on all facets of modern OpenGL development, including transformations, texture mapping, shaders, advanced buffers, geometry management, and much more. Fully revised to reflect ARB’s latest official specification (3.3), this edition also contains a new start-to-finish tutorial on OpenGL for the iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad.
Coverage includes
- A practical introduction to the essentials of real-time 3D graphics
- Core OpenGL 3.3 techniques for rendering, transformations, and texturing
- Writing your own shaders, with examples to get you started
- Cross-platform OpenGL: Windows (including Windows 7), Mac OS X, GNU/Linux, UNIX, and embedded systems
- OpenGL programming for iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad: step-by-step guidance and complete example programs
- Advanced buffer techniques, including full-definition rendering with floating point buffers and textures
- Fragment operations: controlling the end of the graphics pipeline
- Advanced shader usage and geometry management
- A fully updated API reference, now based on the official ARB (Core) OpenGL 3.3 manual pages
- New bonus materials and sample code on a companion Web site, www.starstonesoftware.com/OpenGL
I’ve been looking over this book for the last few days (they were kind enough to provide me a review copy) and I’m impressed. While it, admittedly, doesn’t mention anything about the new OpenGL4.0 or 4.1 specs, it does a great job covering OpenGL3.3. It opens with all of the basics of geometry, matrix math, and texturing, before moving into buffer objects, vertex and pixel shaders, and geometry queries. It even gets platform specific at the end, detailing things you need to know about the specifics of using OpenGL 3.3 on Windows, OSX, or Linux, and contains a chapter on OpenGL ES for mobile devices, including a chapter or two specifically for the iPhone.
I highly recommend it, and you can find this book and many others in the VizWorld Store.
VideoSphere – browse TED talks Semantically
The videosphere project aims to link and visualize the many semantic relationships between video, and has been initially loaded with the TED talks. Computing a “relationship” factor based on the shared tags between videos, the result is a fun interactive space where you can see the many relationships between the videos and find unexpected relationships.
