Microsoft Research’s Terapixel Image

Microsoft has put their flag in the sand in a way that won’t soon be surpassed, with the release of their “Terapixel Image” project.  A spherical image of the sky, from the Digitized Sky Survey, they combined 1800 images on a 64-node cluster into a massive 802GB file one 1 Terapixel.

The result of the Terapixel project is a full color 24 bit RGB terapixel image of the night sky. The artifacts of the original telescope imaging process have been programmatically removed. The resulting image can be viewed in the WorldWide Telescope and by Bing Maps.TeraPixel is a showcase for Microsoft technologies in many-core computing, in high performance and data-intensive distributed computing, and in scientific workflow management.

A TeraPixel (that’s 1-Million MegaPixels) would require roughly a half-million HD Televisions.

The 2010 World Cup: a Global Conversation

Twitter has finally analyzed the massive amount of twitter traffic collected during the 2010 World Cup, analyzing the various hashtags they created for individual teams and games.  Their result: the above infographic cataloging how the traffic broke down during this record-shattering event.

To highlight how much Twitter has been pulsing with World Cup activity over the past month, our analytics and relevance teams put together the infographic above, charting fans’ use of hashflags (like #esp or #usa) during the tournament with a background of TPS over the same period.

* When you look at this graphic, think of it like a soundwave — the louder and more consistent the “sound,” the bigger the impact in all directions.

* Countries’ flags represent use of their hashflag. The size of the flag “waves” fluctuate with the frequency & consistency of tweets containing each country’s hashflag.

Every Doctor Who villain since 1963 – Visualized

A great find by the Guardian, xxnapoleonsolo on Many Eyes has created an interactive chart of all Doctor Who Villians in the entire history of the long-running show.

Here’s a list of all the Doctor Who villains there have ever been since the very first episode in 1963. Whether it’s to help you put your bet on what will make a reappearance next series or just to satisfy hard-core Whovians, hopefully this will help you out.

The chart however doesn’t include villains exclusively in Doctor Who books, audio books and spin-off shows.

Circle Size corresponds to the number of appearances in the series.

Imagineer Systems mocha Tracking System at SIGGRAPH2010

Imagineer Systems will be at SIGGRAPH2010 in a few weeks demonstrating their newest planar tracking and roto system ‘mocha’, which includes impresssive export capabilities for Nuke and tools for 2D-to-3D conversion.  Steve Wright had this to say:

“After 20 years of VFX production doing roto by hand, I was blown away by mocha and its planar tracker that has revolutionized the roto process. Each roto shape ‘rides on the back’ of an amazingly effective planar tracker which gives the shape an initial smooth and accurate motion. The roto artist just has to refine the shape’s control points here and there. Exporting either tracking data or the roto shapes themselves to Nuke is a snap. mocha is a major improvement in both productivity and quality for all my Nuke compositing.”

The product is available today for $1095 (new) or $495 (upgrade), but they’re offering a 20% discount this month only.  Full release after the break.
