The RED Epic and Scarlet still have a ways to go before they catch Duke Nukem Forever, but their legacy as a vaporware product in the video space is well-known. Finally, company founder Jim Jannard has announced what’s been holding them up, and sadly announced that the resolution may lead to even more delays. Apparently there has been a significant firmware bug compounded by manufacturer problems.
The CEO also warned that the issue was compounded by manufacturer problems. He wouldn t name the builder but said it had “significant issues” and that an attempt to build the EPIC camera in the US wasn t working. RED is now looking for a new partner and may see additional delays without a replacement arriving in time.
via RED EPIC, Scarlet hit by major bug, dropped manufacturer | Electronista.
@twhitcomb chill man, I used to be a Red hater. I thought they would never even get the Red One off the ground…then they did. Not only that but they managed to bring out a better sensor for it. So I’m a convert – I converted to the fact that there are many roads to achieving great images!
Red speaks for itself. I’ve shot with all the cameras so far. And I mean ALL including EPIC. I’ve shot with the prototype EPIC and with a finished, painted, properly packaged EPIC.
So @randallhand, you ARE wrong. Epic is working, just not totally bug free. Like any technology, from ANY manufacturer, it has to be beta tested. I think 40 units being tested by certain ‘special’ clients means that the camera is alive and working…just not up to the spec Red want.
So, vaporware it isn’t. As for the whole DSLR thing…you can’t pull an image from a DSLR video that can be used as a double page spread in a magazine with quality that holds up to magazine standards…you can with Red. Having said that, they’re still great at producing good quality HD images in a small package.
WHEN Epic and Scarlet arrive they will have been worth the wait.
I’m really tired of waiting for the Red Scarlet/Epic. My excitement is gone. Too many delays. I am focusing on Canon at the moment, which I will definitely buy…

@twhitcomb funny, I don’t see anything in the article about the RED ONE, so I don’t know why you felt the need to bring that up.
As for the EPIC/Scarlet, the camera module has been “imminent” since 2008, so it’s already pretty significantly delayed with still no real idea of a release. I say that pretty well puts it in the ‘vaporware’ category.
Granted, I love the tech and hope they eventually get it fixed up, but the continued delays cast doubt.
Vaporware? For a self proclaimed founder of Vizworld, you are an idiot. the RED ONE with M-X sensor has been in the wild for years and dozens of movies and TV shows shoot with it.
I held the EPIC in Vegas, its some of the heaviest vaporware I have ever felt.
Get a clue you lazy ass. They have a firmware BUG, its caused delays to the most advanced camera ever manufactured…
the only thing that is vaprware is Vixworld, the lamest online rag on the planet
Holy cow, you’re a dick.
1 year later and still no scarlet.
As for twhitcomb, he is Red’s newest and most innovative marketing scheme:
Ladies and gentlemen, meet Red Asshole™. Keep in mind that for Red Asshole™ to be a functioning asshole, he will need a proprietary Red Stick Up His Ass™ ($2,000) and a proprietary Red Passive-Aggressive Superiority Complex™ ($1,500).
So glad I decided not to wait any longer and bought into the Canon DSLR movement. It’s a giant leap from the Canon XHA1. I am truly sad for RED and hope they can recover and bring those aggressive morals to market.
