The Christie WU7K-M DLP projector

Christie is coming out with a new dual-lamp projector that opens a world of stereoscopic 3d projection at an impressive 6,300 lumens.  It supports dual-link DVI at full 300Mhz bandwidth, and can support three different types of stereo:

  • 120Hz Framerate
  • Frame-doubled content
  • Frame-locked passive stereo converted to active stereo at 120Hz

It is a tiny 10.2 x 19.7 x 22.1 inches and only 55 lbs, making it one of the smallest stereo-capable projectors worth owning.

New AMD Firestream Doubles Performance per Watt

A new press release from AMD announces their new AMD FireStream 9350 and 9370 GPU compute accelerators, apparently feeling the hurt from the new NVidia Fermi offerings as the entire press release focuses on the 2x improvement in Single and Double Precision performance.

“Our customers’ face increasingly demanding enterprise data center requirements for power consumption, cooling, and floor space, and at Supermicro our goal is to deliver solutions that offer maximum performance per watt, per square foot and per dollar,” said Don Clegg, vice president of Marketing at Supermicro. “By offering GPU compute accelerators in combination with powerful multi-core CPUs, we are keeping pace with our customers’ demands. The AMD FireStream 9350 and 9370 compute accelerators are a natural fit for our industry-leading server solutions.”

They claim that the new 9370 offers 2.64 TeraFlops of single precision performance, and 528 GigaFlops of double-precision performance, all with 4GB of GDDR5 memory and 225Watts of power.  That puts a 5x boost on single-precision over double-precision, not too shabby.  These numbers still beat the max figures of the NVidia cards, but the big question is “What possibly can achieve that maximum throughput in a useful way?” The short answer is: nothing.

It definitely looks like a great card from ATI, but I’m sure in practical benchmarks between it and the new Fermi-driven NVidia offerings, the NVidia will probably still edge it out due to CUDA support and better scheduling and kernel optimizations.

SPEC Releases SPECviewperf 11

Those of you in the GPU Benchmarking arena, be it for graphics or GPGPU, are probably already aware, but for the rest of you: The SPEC Graphics Performance Characterization group that just release SPECviewperf11.

“This is one of the most significant releases of SPECviewperf in recent years,” says Ian Williams, SPECgpc chair. “It delivers a much better user experience and the major workload updates better align graphics performance results with what users experience in their day-to-day work with professional applications.”

It adds support for all the newest OpenGL capabilities and includes newer models guaranteed to make even the most powerful cards cry.

HDTV Owners Need To Be Aware of Firmware Updates

This past weekend I went with family and friends to see Toy Story 3 in 3-D. At the theater that we went to, the 3-D glasses were shutter glasses. The movie was extremely well written, which is something that is lacking in Hollywood these days, and could easily stand on its own as a 2-D movie. That pretty much says it all. The 3-D effects in the movie were superb. They were not overdone, as has been the case in past movies. Instead, they added to the richness and the depth of the movie.

However, I am still a skeptic when it comes to 3-D in the home. We have covered some of the reasons for that in previous posts. One of the problems with 3-D in the homes is that people will need to buy a new TV just after they recently bought HD TVs. They will need to buy glasses for everyone in the family, and for any friends that might come over.

But there are other problems as well. In the movie theater the other night, any extra light in the room was distracting because it reflected off the inside of the 3-D glasses. The Exit sign, the lighting on the aisles, and overhead lighting all caused this trouble. How many distracting lights are in your house where you watch TV?

HDGuru has covered other problems with 3-D in the home. Do you think that you can buy Compatible 3D Glasses for your TV? It turns out that each brand of 3-D glasses has a different tint to it. So much for seeing the correct colors in the movie you bought. Furthermore, HDGuru points out that to even play the latest movie on your 3-D TV and using your 3-D Blu-Ray player, you may need to do a firmware update.

We are in the process of testing a number of 2010 model HDTVs and Blu-ray players. All to date have required firmware updates to enhance performance, add or correct a number of performance functions and in the case of Blu-ray players, allow the playing some newly released discs. Without a firmware update, early and current Blu-ray players can’t play all new discs because disc authoring continues to change.

I remember having to do this with my original Toshiba DVD player back in 1996. Forgive me for being a pessimist, but I think that I will sit on the sidelines until 3-D in the home stabilizes a bit. And that won’t occur in 2010.

AMD FireStream 9350 and 9370


AMD annouced today the FireStream 9350 and 9370 graphics processing units (GPU) for general purpose computing (GPGPU). Both of the GPUs are scheduled to be release in the 3rd quarter of 2010.

The FireStream 9350 will come with 1,440 SIMD cores running at 700 MHz. The GPU will also come with 2 GB of GDDR5 graphics memory running at 1 GHz. The GPU supports OpenCL, DirectX 11 and OpenGL. The GPU will consume 150 Watts of power, and will cost $799.

The FireStream 9370 will come with 1,600 SIMD cores running at 825 MHz. The GPU will also come with 4 GB of GDDR5 graphics memory running at 1.15 GHz. The GPU supports OpenCL, DirectX 11 and OpenGL. The GPU will consume 225 Watts of power, and will cost $1,999.
