Gimp has had CS5’s “Content Aware Fill” option for some time through a plugin named ‘Resynth’. The two algorithms vary in their implementation and effectiveness, and UltraDownloads.com ran both of them through a series of tests to gauge the effectiveness. Ranging from the fairly basic (above) to more complex tests, it’s interesting to see the unusual differences between the algorithms.

I have been a long term user of Photoshop, more recently I have started using Gimp because Ubuntu runs much better than Windows on my laptop and I’ve been impressed at how it copes with +500Mb combined panoramic images.
It is good to see an article that focuses on an element where Photoshop has been lagging, most online comparisons focus on the features of Photoshop and don’t look at all at the features of Gimp that Photoshop doesn’t support. Also Gimp has add-ons for most of the Photoshop features that it is missing after a basic install.
