Infographic: From Apple Lisa to the iPad

Apple has been selling computers in one fashion or another since 1976, with varying degrees of success.  Given the over 30 years of history, what is the relative price of the earlier Apple products (The Apple I, the Apple Lisa, the Newton), in relation to current products like the iPad?  VoucherCodes.co.uk took it upon themselves to find out.

Looking back through the archives, to the launch of the first Apple computer in 1976, we’ve worked out how much it would cost to buy each of Apple’s new major product releases today – accounting for inflation.

So, is the iPad as good value as Steve Jobs would like us to believe? We’ll let you make your own mind up.

Floating Sheep: Beer Belly of American in 3-D, sort of

Floating Sheep is back, and this time they have gone 3-D! Well, sort of…

Of course, since our budget is slight smaller than Hollywood’s, you may find it harder to lose yourself in the magic of animation. Also, for some reason the happy beer belly has been transformed into a spikey midwestern landscape of doom. And the blue grocery store map reminds us too much of what we saw last time we looked under a table at the cafeteria.

But besides that, it is just like Avatar.

Microsoft on the new NVidia GTX480

In a new blog post from Microsoft, you can almost hear the cheers as NVidia finally released a new video card compatible with DirectX11, removing what might be the last hurdle to users not upgrading to Windows 7.

The new features and capabilities of the GTX 480 and GTX 470 are exposed especially in Windows 7 where NVIDIA has taken advantage of the enhancements Windows 7 offers users today – such as DirectX 11. With DirectX 11, the GTX 480 and GTX 470 can offer some impressive effects through scalable hardware tessellation. Tessellation offers the ability to create rich detail in through either games or software applications with geometric realism – it’s better at doing geometric processing

While the post remains positive, it’s a bit unfortunate to see how hard they have to try to find something beneficial.  At the end of the point, the really only come up with 2 things:  Geometric Processing, and 3D Vision.

Foundry Previews Mari at NAB2010

The Foundry will be demonstrating some new software products at the upcoming NAB2010, and fxguide has an inside scoop on one product in particular: Mari.  Meant as a dedicated 3D Painting & Texturing tool, the sentence below is really all you need to know about it:

In all, this means Mari is happy managing over 100 gigabyte geometry and texture data sets on a single model without slowing down artist interaction and workflow. High performance is achieved with modest hardware requirements (2-4 gigabyte system memory, .5-1 gigabyte graphics memory), with Mari automatically making efficient use of available resources and background task processes.

Once you’ve picked your jaw up off the floor, head on over to fxGuide to read the details.

Autodesk Showcase

Based off the Nvidia Scene Graph (NVSG), Autodesk Showcase takes 3-D CAD data and transforms it into visually realistic images. Showcase also operates with Autodesk Moldflow, injection molding simulation software. This allows a designer to see where defects in the design might occur. The YouTube video shows off both Showcase, and how it interacts with Moldflow.

Autodesk Showcase visualization software enables you to create accurate, highly realistic imagery from 3D CAD data. When coupled with the Autodesk Moldflow 2011 software, you can significantly enhance design reviews and quality assessments of plastic parts by examining a photorealistic rendering of the manufactured digital prototype.

This interoperability lets you see how the part might actually look in real life and determine whether the defects are visible to the eye, enabling you to assess part quality and decide whether the design needs to be changed to avoid downstream manufacturing defects.

New Verde Drivers Bring 3D Vision Support to Notebooks

Nvidia released new drivers for notebooks to PCs yesterday. These drivers add support for conencting 3-D displays to your notebook. This assumes, of course, that you have a Nvidia graphics chip in your notebook that is powerful enough to drive a 3-D display, and that you have a such a display.

With a compatible NVIDIA-powered notebook, you can use a 3D projector, DLP HDTV or 120Hz LCD to play over 425 PC games or view movies and digital photographcs in full stereoscopic 3D. You can even connect a full HD 1080p Alienware or ACER LCD display to your notebook for the highest quality stereoscopic experience. This driver kit will also work with the ASUS G51J 3D laptop which has a built-in 3D Vision LCD display.
