Yesterday we reported on the new 196.75 Drivers that offer some impressive performance boosts.  Unfortunately, it seems they do so by disabling the GPU fan. That’s bad.. Very very bad.  The official word from Nvidia:

We are aware that some customers have reported fan speed issues with the latest 196.75 WHQL drivers on NVIDIA.com. Until we can verify and root cause this issue, we recommend that customers stay with, or return to 196.21 WHQL drivers. Release 196.75 drivers have been temporarily removed from our Web site in the meantime.

Several sites are carrying the story, but some of us may remember that recently Nvidia released a driver that disabled overclocking, quickly followed by a beta version of a driver to fix it.  Both of these buggy drivers were WHQL certified, meaning they’ve been tested by Microsoft and found “worthy”.

So who’s to blame?  Seems NVidia’s software team is having some QA issues, and Microsoft’s WHQL program may be completely worthless.  What do you think?
