Pixels for 3/31/2010: Texture Controls and Camera Tracks

Infographic: Under The Knife: Cosmetic Surgery Facts & Figures

DailyBurn has a new infographic online tracking the facts and figures of cosmetic surgery in men and women.  No surprise that the #1 cosmetic surgery of women is Breast Augmentation. (It still is after 2011, with liposuction still coming second, according to  the most recent plastic surgery statistics)

The popularity of cosmetic surgery has grown exponentially in the past few decades as our society becomes more comfortable with taking extreme measures to alter their appearance. Below the look at some of the most popular procedures being done today.

The graphic is pretty enough, but some odd design choices.  A few quirks:

  • The “top cosmetic” surgeries should be in order from #1 to #5, not from proximal to distal
  • I don’t understand the “Frequency by Age Group” chart.  What’s the Percentage?  Are all 5 bars supposed to add up to 100%?  Is it Percentage of all people in that age group?
  • Using circles for “Most Expensive Procedures”? With so many of them in the $4200-$5000 range, all the circles are effectively the same size.

What do you think?

Lower Cost Nvidia Cards This Summer

Guru3d has reported that specifications for the GeForce GTX 450, 440 and 430 have surfaced. The GTX or GTS 440 and 450 would have a 40nm GF104 core. This core has 256 shader cores and a 256-bit memory bus. The GTS 440 would have 20% slower clock speeds than the GTS 450. The GTS 430, using a cut-down version of the GF104, will have 192 shader cores and have a 192-bit memory bus. These video cards are reportedly due in June 2010. Tom’s Hardware investigated these rumors one step further:

Last week there were also reports that cheaper, DX11-capable Fermi-based GeForce graphics cards will be arriving sometime this summer, possibly June. We contacted Nvidia to find out whether this was the case or another churn in the rumor mill. According to the company, that is indeed the case, and was actually mentioned by Nvidia executives at a recent financial conference.

Earlier we listed two ways for you to win an Apple iPad. Today we have another contest to tell you about.Apple is releasing its Apple iPad on April 3rd, and Techbargains wants to give you a chance to win it.

Apple is releasing its highly anticipated Apple iPad on April 3rd and TechBargains is giving the 16GB Wi-Fi version to one lucky TechBargains user. Be one of the first to own this one of a kind gadget and be the envy of your friends (especially since you didn’t pay for it). Entering is easy and you can increase your odds of winning our secondary (not too shabby) prize if you tell your friends to enter as well.

How to Win?

Simply become a fan of TechBargains on Facebook. We will choose one lucky fan 2 days after the official release (scheduled for April 3) via a random drawing. We will contact you through your Facebook profile if you are the winner. It’s that easy!

RTT to begin implementing Mental Images Technology

A huge announcement from RTT today, as they state they will begin to integrate mental image’s iray and neuray, along with RealityServer, into their RTT PowerHouse and RTT DeltaGen products.  Already in use by several high-end automotive and aerospace agencies, the inclusion of mental images technology should elevate their visuals to new levels of realism.

“The integration of iray into our products is a logical continuation of our strategy. mental images’s state-of-the-art approach and the alignment of iray with our strategic hardware and middleware platforms fit perfectly with our high quality and performance standards here at RTT,” says Ludwig A. Fuchs, Co-Founder and Co-CEO of RTT AG. “Whether our clients are designing the aerodynamic body of a high-end sports car or promoting a special-edition jogging shoe, they will have the benefit of better image quality and faster workflows. We look forward to harnessing the power of CUDA GPUs for highest-quality results that will be generated faster than ever before.”

No surprise he would mention CUDA, as mental images is owned by NVidia now.  Read the full release after the break.

Guru3D Eyefinity6 review

Guru3D has a nine page review of the AMD Radeon HD 5870 Eyefinity6 posted. As we described earlier, this card is no different than the regular AMD Radeon HD 5870 with the exception of its having 6 mini-DisplayPorts, and 2 GB of memory. Guru3D has posted several of its videos of the Eyefinity6 in action on YouTube, some of which we posted about recently, and even tested out using it in Crossfire mode (that is, using two Eyefinity6 cards together)!

So yes, we’ll look at Eyefinity6, we’ll build a nice frame that can hold the six Dell monitors we are using in this review and then will get our groove on. Now we’ll also show some performance numbers as we’ll not only use one, but two Radeon HD 5870 Eyefinity6 cards, which we’ll setup in CrossfireX, but more overly I like this article to be a show case. As such we’ll record some high-definition footage and show you videos of a gaming in a MASSIVE monitor resolution of 5040×2100.

Movie★Slate ClapperBoard & Shot Log for iPhone

A friend of mine showed this to me today, and I had to share.  Next time you find yourself on a shoot without a clapperboard, check out this great $10 app called MovieSlate from PureBlend Software that combines a clapperboard and shot log into one slick interface.

Movie★Slate is a convenient, all-in-one digital slate, clapper board, shot log, and shot notepad— designed for use in film, television, documentaries, music videos, and interviews. This professional production tool is the easy way to log footage and take notes as you shoot— saving you valuable time later when capturing and editing footage. At a mere fraction of a bulky digital clapperboard’s cost, you’ll be saving money too.

In addition to simply tracking shots and claps, it merges in several notes features and a neat digital timecode that you can customize to run at whatever framerate you plan to work at (24, 29.97, and several others).  The timecode continues running even when the app does not, and can export all of the data in several formats (including Final Cut XML format).

Now just imagine running all of that on an iPad, up against the physical ones with fewer features that run over $50.

LG set to lead the global 3D TV market

The LG LX9500 is the world’s first Full LED 3-D TV. The 55-inch model utilizes 1,200 LEDs, and 480 Hz refresh rate. The body of the LX9500 has a depth of just 22.3mm and also has a slim 16mm bezel. To achieve the 3-D effect, the LX9500 utilizes shutter glass technology.

But that is not all. LG is the No. 2 maker of televisions in the world. They see the growing demand for 3-D TVs and want to lead the way. In fact, in a recent press release they said:

LG is committed to securing a dominant position in this fast growing market expected to surpass 80 million units by 2014, and aiming to achieve 25 percent share of 3D market in 2010.

SecondLife’s new Starter Experience

Gothic 3D ChatA new press release from Linden Labs, creators of Second Life, details the changes they’ve made to the “first hour” experience.  In addition to some back-end changes to improve stability and a newly redesigned website, they’ve implemented a new user interface called ‘Viewer 2′, and a selection of new starter avatars to check out.

“Today’s upgrades represent major steps toward making Second Life a more readily accessible online reality for users worldwide,” said Mark Kingdon, CEO of Linden Lab. “Over the next year, we will continue to break down the walls that have traditionally separated Second Life from the rest of the social Web – you can see the start of this with Shared Media. We’ll be continuing to bring more of the Web into Second Life, and more of Second Life out to the social Web. In doing so, we will make it increasingly possible for 3D social experiences to become a part of many more people’s daily online lives, just as 2D social networks are for millions today.”

The Bulk of Shopping Still Takes Place in Store

Despite the fact that I buy a lot of items on-line (including books from Amazon, and computer parts from NewEgg), most of my shopping is still in-store as well. After all, I buy most of my groceries from Wal Mart or Kroger. I have yet to buy a car from Ebay, though I have quite a few friends who have done it. But perhaps that is because I drive my cars for over a decade. Milo.com has taken a look at on-line shopping and finds that it accounts for less than 5% of retail sales.

It’s hard to believe it, but it’s true–less than 5% of retail sales are actually done online! The rest still happen on Main Street, at the mall, and at the big-box retailer down the road. So how does the Internet come in handy? It’s perfect for doing research before you hit the road so you know exactly what you want and where to get it.
