I've conducted enough trainings & product demos in Second Life & ReactionGrid to place high value on tools that easily and visually point to specific positions within the virtual environment (opposed to saying, "please look at the red square at the bottom right...wait, it's on your left...do you see it?"). I've made a few of these tools, some that are freely available, some with instructions on how educators can build them themselves ( http://theimmersivelife.wordpress.com/?s=pointer ), and some for sale ( http://theimmersivelife.wordpress.com/?s=3dpointer ).Also, just wanted to clarify on The BrainBoard's cost. It's actually $38 USD for educators, since educators get a 25% discount on all my tools.

Another type of tool not mentioned is the pointer. I'd like to add two comments:- SL has voice over IP (VoIP) like Skype built-in, and it's spatialized, so that if someone is speaking on your left (in SL), they will sound like they're on your left (i.e. their voice will be heard in your left ear slightly sooner than your right ear). Voice is often used for live lectures and seminars in Second Life.- SL doesn't have anything like a realtime chalkboard or whiteboard, yet. There have been many attempts, but none that work well. Linden Lab is coming out with something called the llMedia API which will let people write media-player plugins for the SL viewer (client software). If someone writes a Flash player that works in SL, then that might work as a chalkboard. (The instructor would have to have something like a Wacom tablet at their end.)

This is a good overview. I speak at conferences on eLearning and virtual worlds as a tool. Very nice that you have Texas A&M in there and UT-D has a great SL presence.

Great post and nice details!
