Open Invitation for VisIt Benchmark Ideas

visit-plotAfter we reported on the inclusion of VisIt into the SuperComputing 2009 Student Cluster Competition, Hank Childs stopped by to post some information.

As far as the benchmarks: the evaluation criteria is still being determined. From an HPC perspective, we obviously want to stress I/O, compute, and communication.

My initial thoughts were to upsample a toy data set to become a large one, then have them run a script to make a movie. I was thinking a three frame movie with volume rendering, contouring, and a moving slice.

He follows it up with an invitation for suggestions and ideas on what to include in the contest criteria. So, here’s your chance: What would make for a good VisIt benchmark?

NVIDIA Fermi sample renderings (HOAX)

fermi-1

Update 6:22pm: Images seem to be a hoax, Read the discovery here.

Users on a Chinese WebForum have posted some images claiming to come from real-time renders generated with NVidia’s new Fermi chipset.  Both images show a startling level of detail in facial rendering, including hair and pores at a level of detail previously unseen in real-time renders.  Also, a second set of users have discovered some leaked information about Fermi mobile chipsets:

While not necessarily reflective of the entire lineup, the initial chipsets seen in a driver page appear to be aimed at the mid-to-low end. The GeForce GTS 360M appears to be the lone performance chip while the GT 335M and GT 330M will be two closely related mainstream models. The GeForce 310M and 305M together are likely to be the very low end aimed at systems that need just slightly more than integrated graphics.

See the rest of the images after the break.

Update 11/13: Emboldened the line at the top of this post, since people still keep trying to tell me this is a Hoax.
