OpenCTM has just released v0.7 of their amazing mesh-compression library. If you’ve never used OpenCTM, it’s a triangular mesh compression technology that can reduce the filesize of a mesh to 5-6% of it’s original size, preserving all the geometry.
OpenCTM is primarily a file format for storing 3D triangle meshes in a compact yet versatile format. In order to make it easy for software developers and 3D designers to support the format, an easy to use software library is provided that can read and write OpenCTM format files.
It is important to understand that OpenCTM is only concerned with managing triangle mesh data. In other words, OpenCTM is not a scene description format. For instance, OpenCTM does not handle multiple meshes, transformation matrices, materials, light sources, physical properties, etc.
It supports vertex colors and texture coordinates, and an impressive set of benchmarks can be seen on their Performance page.

Nissan and Designboom have partnered to bring us the “Think Outside the Parking Box” contest. Design a parking solution, showcasing the new Nissan “Quashqai” (not the foggiest idea how you pronounce that) for a chance to win up to € 5000 euro .
The urban parking challenge is open to innovative designers with a bold and daring vision. Design is an innovative field with an ever-growing number of mediums to create this parking renovation: graphic, video, urban, industrial, lighting, motion and more. Ideas may be delivered as videos, objects or illustrations.
You need to include a Qashqai model or a part of it (rear-view mirrors, grills, wheels, wheel caps…) in the final entry. The Qashqai model does not have to be necessary a part of the design itself. It should just be included somewhere in the final video, in the picture of your object, illustration or image depicting the design. A variety of images & videos of the Qashqai model are available to include in the entry as you wish to feature it.

If you’ve never used Maxon’s Cinema4D (C4D), then you may not realize just how easily and nicely it interfaces with Adobe’s AfterEffects. The two products share similar interfaces and Maxon has spent considerable time and effort on making the two work seamlessly. In a new tutorial on aeTuts+, you can see the symbiotic relationship in action.
The more you get into After Effects, the more you realize how cool it is to bring in stuff from outside the program. This tutorial shows how take a scene from Cinema 4D and bring it over into AE. After effects is a compositing program and this is a perfect example of how to take a basic animation and add some “after effects”!

Photon Inc has published a preliminary look at their “Tuvalu Visualization PRoject”. Tuvalu is in danger of sinking into the ocean as water levels rise from global warming, however it has proven difficult to collect information about the people and scenery of Tuvalu.
The purpose of project is to disclose actual information about ”People” and ”Scenery” in Tuvalu to the world. It is said that Tuvalu is exposed to danger of going under water by sea level rising because of global warming. However, we suppose that it is important to understand not only the problem of global warming, but also the real situation of Tuvalu. The Internet is an effective tool for collecting information, but it was difficult to obtain information of the real situation of Tuvalu from the Internet. Therefore, we produced this project to present the real situation of Tuvalu, to improve the interest in Tuvalu, and to receive feedback from all over the world.
The full project is expected to be published next month (September).

A new promotional campaign from Kleenex, to tout their new Anti-Viral tissues, uses technology and art from Rhino to show the Flu Bug in TV, Web, or film.
For the Flu Bug, Rhino started with a sketch. The resulting Flu Bug – created in Photoshop and Maya, finished in After Effects, and delivered in a targa sequence — twitches and skitters his way through live video, peers around corners of the Battle the Bug website, and gets yanked into an animated Kleenex tissue box, also built by Rhino.

Two quick website changes that you should be aware of:
- I removed FaceBook Connect from the login options, it was causing simply too many problems (both technical and usability). As an alternative, I’ve enabled FaceBook authentication via RPX, which should make it a far more fluid & usable option.
- TweetMeme buttons are now only show for full-content articles, not excerpts. This should improve page-load time, and the button will reappear when you click to read the full article.

A new tutorial on CGTuts+ shows how to create immaculate normal maps in Autodesk’s 3DS Max.
In video games, resources are always on a tight budget. Normal mapping allows the artist to achieve the look of a highly detailed model, while still using a very low triangle count and relatively small texture sizes.

The Xbox360 and PS3 have both been around for a few years now, and have really raised the bar on gaming consoles. But now that they’ve been out and developers have had a chance to get down-and-dirty with the details, what do they think? The examiner compiles some numbers on the graphics capabilities and finds the PS3 lacking in several areas, but the most damning parts come from developer statements:
I think [PS3 is] a waste of everybody’s time. Investing in the Cell, investing in the SPE gives you no long-term benefits. There’s nothing there that you’re going to apply to anything else. You’re not going to gain anything except a hatred of the architecture they’ve created. I don’t think they’re going to make money off their box.
I’ve heard rumors in HPC circles that the Cell chip is dead, maybe they’re right?
