A new market study from Jon Peddle Research concludes that the Modeling and Animation market will continue to grow over the next 5 years, from a current valuation of $219M to $328M in 2013. Why?
Beyond traditional industries, new markets are also opening up for more casual users of 3D modeling and animation tools, defying barriers posed by high cost and complexity. Free 3DM&A tools are becoming available and millions of copies are being downloaded every year suggesting a pent-up demand for easy-to-use 3D tools. In addition, there is a hard core of hobbyists and casual users who are using 3D tools even though the learning curve is steep. New distribution models are just now opening up including online worlds, YouTube, MyToons, the Daz communities, and more. By the end of this decade, new growth will come in mainstream markets, the report says.

Variety is carrying the story that, amid economic turmoil and widespread unemployment in the VFX industry, Imageworks still plans to remain a profitable and prominent VFX house. How?
Exec VP for production Debby Denise said that while Imageworks now has to compete against small shops all over the world many with much lower labor costs “The studios and filmmakers have to weigh the cost advantages against the risk of the small shops not being able to deliver large numbers of shots in time for the release date.” Imageworks advantage she said is “They can depend on us.”
Add in more automation of some processes and their obvious partnership with Sony, it seems that Imageworks might have a chance.
Aaron Presnail has recently won the Knight News Challenge award, putting in control of a quarter million dollars. What does he plan to do with it?
He also understands that only a handful of news outlets can afford to invest significant resources in the beautiful-yet-intelligible presentation of such data, which is why he plans to use his $243,600 Knight News Challenge award to build an open-source data visualization module targeting community newspapers, independent journalists and bloggers — really, anyone interested in publishing data visualizations.
Every SIGGRAPH has an outreach component, and this year is no different. Information is now coming out about what they plan to do this year.
To give back to the New Orleans local community, SIGGRAPH introduces the SIGGRAPH 2009+1 Outreach program, giving people from around the globe opportunities to give back through a series of partnerships with local organizations. These outreach efforts focus on helping to educate local youth about enriching careers in technology and creative arts with a long term goal of strengthening the community as a whole by investing in this next generation.
So far they’ve announced 4 initiatives:
The Algiers Technical Academy is getting a new computer graphics lab, with equipment donated from Walt Disney Animation Studios and software from Autodesk
SIGGRAPH will be creating & selling a compilation album of music from the nearby musicians, with the funds to go to the Louis Satchmo Armstrong Summer Jazz Camp
SIGGRAPH is bringing 50 students from the New Orleans Center for creative Art and another 50 from the Algiers Technical Academy for a mentor/mentee day
SIGGRAPH will be running a mobile text message based fundraising campaign for Tipitina’s Foundation
