A beta project named “ScienceSim”, aimed at building 3D technologies for visualizing 3D information on the web, will be operating a virtual world for Supercomputing09. Based on the open source package OpenSim, it’s effectively a Second-Life world for discussion of topics related to SC09.
Full instructions for connecting are available on their website.

Visualization in the finance sector is nothing new, but the extent of it is somewhat shrouded in secrecy. Each trader has their own secrets and tools, and are somewhat reluctant to share it with others. Andrew Hart over at Seeking Alpha has a roundup of 5 such tools that track finance and stock data with everything from basic line and bar charts to more complex heatmap visualizations.

IBM has announced a new initiative called “Deep Computing Services” which draws from IBM’s extensive high performance computing experience to offer clients access to specializing supercomputing skills. Of interest is one area:
Deep Computing Visualization support — can span the design and integration of a visualization system as well as development of unique components and related services to support insight on scientific and engineering problems through visualization solutions.
No more information than that, unfortunately, other than the Rocky Mountain Supercomputing Centers in Montana contracted with IBM and seems fairly happy.

Imaginary Forces is a premier creator of “Screen Design” solutions. Screen Design is a small but rich area of motion graphics that specializing in creating computer interfaces or data visualizations for movies. Over on Motionographer they talk about their recent contributions in the recently Terminator Salvation movie.
A recent example of screen design can be found in Terminator Salvation, for which Imaginary Forces created “machine vision” used in POV shots to emulate the human-hating robots’ view of the world. The monochromatic graphics and fixed-width type call to mind early computer displays, suggesting a mechanically-minded consciousness (instead of, say, a sleek, digital one).
They also are responsible for the screen designs visible in Quantum of Solace and the recent Microsoft ads.

If you weren’t able to hop a plan to Europe for EuroVis2009, then InformationAesthetics has the next best thing.
We just returned from the EuroVis 2009 [zib.de] conference in Berlin, and we would like to share some of the experience with the infosthetics community. We joined about 200 international visualization researchers for a conference program mixing information visualization, scientific visualization, visual analytics, and plenty of Berliner Weisse. New this year were poster presentations, child care(!), as well as a workshop and a tutorial before the conference.

Luxology has just released modo401, which has seen a slow release of new features over the last several months, starting in February. New features in this release include full animation capabilities including constraints for rigging as well as a huge lists of enhancements across the board to asset sharing, importing and export, rendering and materials. Moving from a simple modeler to a full animation suite is no simple task, but Modo seems to have pulled it off expertly.
Available now for $995, a single license will run on both Mac and Windows. See a demonstration video after the break.

A mesmerizing video of 1000fps footage aired at the recent NAB2009 conference, taken with a SprintCamV3.
Here is the first SprintCam v3 showreel, made for NAB 2009 exhibition.
Mostly 1000FPS shots, made during a recent rugby competition in the Stade de France, Paris.
edit2 : as I’ve read somewhere that Phantom can actually go faster than Sprintcam, I need to add one information that may be useful to tech freaks : shots in rugby competition were 1000fps, but red jelly is actually 2500fps!! So I’m sorry for Phantom lovers, but at least for now, neither Phantom or any other model won’t go that fast at full HD res…
